Welcome to Breaktime. We appreciate your confidence in our expertise. :) However, you're more likely to get an answer if you post this at Knots, first button in the middle row of buttons above.
Keep in mind that the Taunton forums are not chat rooms. Expecting an answer in 30 minutes is not realistic, especially on the weekend. Some of the people who have the information you're looking for might not even see your question until after work on Monday.
Thanks
Just a suggestion-
If you post in the appropriate folders, you're more likely to get more responces.
It all makes sense to me now
Thanks
To answer the ?, if it's yellow glue (PVA) white vinegar softens it. Now, it doesn't dissolve it so much that it just washes away, but it makes it soft enough that it should at least aid in your ability to remove it.
Hide glue doesn't particularly like heat, or alcohol. (Hmm, I say that, don't trust the alcohol thing 100%, I'm feeling rusty).
More likely than not if it's old, dusty, dirty, etc, the thing that's going to get in your way of regluing the joint is how clean it is. Doesn't take much in the way of furniture polish to really wreck a glue joint. If you suspect (hey, you're seeing it, not me) that you might have oils in there that are giving you headaches, try packing the break with whiting to suck the oil out of it. It works quite well.
And in regluing, if you can get a plastic resin glue, that has a pretty good chance of giving you good results. It doesn't hate contaminants as much as other glues, it's dead simple to use, and it dries very very hard. Weldwood sells it in small (like pint) and large (like half gallon) pails. Mix with water, let slake ten minutes, remix and apply.
