I am remodeling and have several floors in which the carpet pad (quilted rubber) has glued itself to the floors. Some of the pad is soft and can (with difficulty) be removed with a puddy knife. Other parts are hard as a rock and need a paint scraper to remove it. Does anyone have a chemical to release or soften the rubber or an easier way to remove this mess?

I had the same issue with the pad stuck to my oak hardwood floors. I just scraped and lost many pounds through sweat. I hope someone else provides you with a safe (non-staining) chemical answer.

It's worth trying just a little hot water. You don't want to flood the wood floors, obviously, but you might see if just a little moistening loosens the stuff up. I've never had to take up that rubber padding. But I have taken up 25-yr old, rock-hard but water-soluble adhesive where people had glued vinyl over hardwood. Try the old small-amount-in-an-inconspicuous place test.

Another thought would be to try a heat gun (or even a hair dryer) to soften up the hard stuff. Test in that inconspicuous spot, using as little heat as necessary... if the stuff doesn't soften when you get it WARM, then try another approach - I don't think you'd want to actually get the surface HOT.
Good luck, Steve
