Use of fiberglass tape w/ DW w/ready mix
i was recently told that one should not use the ready mix compound with fiberglass tape joints. Investigating further , I found technical literature confirming this with the statement that the only ready mix that should be used is compound specifically labeled for taping. Otherwise setting compound should be used with fiberglass tape. The drywaller that told alerted me stated that this was because the fiberglass tape was not held well in place by the ready mix and showed me the difference. One could put the fiberglass tape off the joint after the compound set but the tape would just tear. I personally think that part of this is that the fiberglass tape is just much stronger and will not tear readily. After talking to others in the trades this issue does not seem to be well known. Any comments?

I've used FG tape with ready mix with no problems -- joints are still fine years later. I think that FG is a little easier for a DIYer to use, and, for the DIYer, **less** apt to peel off or bubble. Bedding paper tape is a little bit of an art, and poorly bedded paper can be yanked right off the wall.
For a pro, maybe, the pendulum swings the other way.
However, supposedly FG is stiffer and needs a stronger bond to prevent joint separation. This is the argument I usually hear for using hot mud with FG.
There is also a self-adhesive paper tape that I've used and found to work fine for small DIY projects.
happy?
My personal experience has led me to NEVER use FG tape unless I'm darn sure they'll be no wood shrinkage or movement. I think it's more likely to crack in corners and off angles - maybe OK between sheets in a field, or on dura-rock

I've known if for a good twenty years. General rule is that FG tape is for DIYs or patching plaster quickly. And only with setting compound not ready mix.
Reason is that the tape is stronger than the bond between compound and board, so that combination will cause cracked finish at the edge of the tape.
