Has anyone used a hot knife to cut rigid insulation? I’m thinking of buying one. It’s got to be easier and faster than using a razor blade. Any feedback would be appreciated. Jamie

Never had any luck with a hot knife doing that, except with cutting really thick flexible plastic sheeting. What is wrong with a retractable razor knife, with a handle that fits your hand. Works for me, instead of having a hot thing laying around acting as a magnet for trouble.
*Thank you for your comments Bill. Why have you not had any luck cutting ridgid insulation with your knife? A razor blade doesn't work to well cutting it in the cold. I looked at the hot knife from http://www.demandproducts.com .Thanks for the info. Jamie
*I've been using a pvc saw for this. Looks like a regular backsaw/dado saw, but it is very very thin, and cuts like a charm. Easy to trim paper thin slices off with it, even.
*Those hot knives will cut through butter like a ...... well you know.I personally don't see what problem you may have using a standard utility knofe with a sharp blade. How hot does a hot knife get, will it melt the rigid insulation and gum up on the blade?Pete
*I keep hearing that there are good hot knives out there that will do the job nicely. I just haaven't seen one yet. An ordinary knife or medium tooth saw warks fine for simple cutting. For grooving, such as for insetting wires into foam, an electric chainsaw with guide wheels bolted on to the bar. Speaking of that, any wires to be inset into foam insulation should, in my opinion, be sized up from what would normally be needed to prevent or reduce heat build-up.Ron
*I use a linoleum knife or a serated sod cutter.
