Using glass blocks in a shower window
Hi everyone, this message is as a result of a discussion in the ‘general’ area in regards to using glass blocks to fill in a shower window. Needless to say I am having a moisture problem with the existing window in the shower surround (wall is rotting below the window).
A couple people had suggested installing glass blocks to gain a water tight/no maintenance window that would still allow light but privacy at the same time. My question is in regards to the application of glass blocks in a shower where outdoor temp. can drop to -30C in the winter.
Has anyone avoided using glass blocks in an exterior wall because of cold weather concerns? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance,
Mike

Well.... I had a glass block window in a shower in a climate where temps in the 30s farenheit were common in winter, rarely if ever colder. Glass block radiates cold in the winter, similar to an insulated glass panel. I'm sure if you call Pittsburgh Corning they will have r-values and other info for you.
I have a glass block window that forms part of my tiled shower wall. In Calgary, Canada we can see temp swings from -40 C to +10C in the space of 2 days. No issues in the 5 years since I put this in myself.
What...no pictures? I feel let down.
I did a large shower in a house of mine about 15-20 years ago and used glass block on an entire exterior wall of it...floor to ceiling...5'x8' and had six block left I've been schlepping around with me from house to house...finally go to use em'.
This shower should be done tomorrow.
Trying to use up all the stuff I've been schlepping around before I die...lol.
And my new motto is, "if in doubt, throw it......ugh...right...
Be well
