Using mutiple types of insulation
My house is undergoing a major remodel and addition (I get a new workshop out of this deal!). The framing has just begun and I’m looking at insulation options, we live in the bay area of Northern California. My current thoughts for insulation are: FB Bats for the crawlspace Blown Cellulose for the exterior walls …and some form of open cell insulation for the cathedral ceilings (spec’d for R30) -AirKrete -Icynene -Polyurethane Is this too crazy of a scheme and too pricey? Comments welcome! BTW: Here’s a link to the demolition video of our house that my wife made, enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZIw9zZ9Rvg

Just got the latest issue of The Journal of Light Construction and it had an article on closed cell foam for cathedral ceilings. Good article--they had lots of good reasons to use closed cell foam. Said the price, if I recall correctly, was about $5 per square foot.
Danno,Wow! $5 square foot seems really pricey! Thanks for the information on the article in JLC. My cathedral ceilings will vented, so I'm now I'm not sure how the advantages of closed cell foam will translate. Will closed cell foam still be as advantageous if I have to use some sort of attic rafter venting system? After searching the web, it seems that there are many articles out there where you eliminate the vent when going with closed cell foam. Its too late to change my plans and I'm not sure what California code would think of that.
Please get me in contact with the author of that article. If he can find me $5 per sq-ft he will be one rich salesmen if he'll come work for me!Icynene at R30 is 8" and your looking at about $3.20. Not cheap but again, not cheap! No worries of condensation water damage and much more efficient than anything else.Spend it where it will pay in the long term. Stu
$5/sq.ft. Is that for R30 at 6/inch (closed cell), thus $1.00/board foot? Sounds right. Open cell generally is less expensive for a given total installed R, but it comes down to how much space is available to use and, in the case of a cathedral, philosophy on leak detection, etc. (other posts have tossed this one around).
