UTC, who knows what it is, and who uses
All,
UTC goes by a few names, but it means universal (global) time. Many a contract has been found invalid by courts for failure to include the time zone and time. Nuance’s aside, it seems to appear more often in everything from weather reports to legal contracts. Any thoughts?

The company I work for, we have offices in two time zones (used to have 4), and deal with suppliers from Germany to California, and everywhere in between.
Not only have to worry about time zones, but also who does what for Daylight Savings Time.
UTC is used when a company is working in different time zones suck as UPS or FEDEX. It is based upon the time in Greenwich England (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time. Ships and planes file travel plans based on GMT. Listen to the BBC sometime they always quote the current time in GMT.
Yeah, they do. And it cracks me up...

Yes it is used in aviation. All flight plans are in GMT.
I would also expected to be used for any kind of transportation and comminications operations.
Any place where the people or information crosses time lines.

Bill,
Funny you say that ,'cause I remember being on a flight for the UK and "landing" at OHR "before" we took off, and all because of a tailwind and "time".

Yeah, UTC is the time formerly known as Greenwich Mean Time. I think UTC stands for Universal Coordinated Time in French.
This is the time that most big computers keep, and even some PCs. They display things in your local time by knowing what timezone you're in and doing the arithmetic.
You'll sometimes see a notation such as "UTC-6" to denote a timezone (in that case CST). This means that the time in that zone would be UTC (London) time minus 6 hours. Times in Europe would be "UTC+" some amount. Guam is "UTC+10".
And of course all the numbers change with Daylight Savings Time, but (computerwise) it makes my head hurt to think about that -- the gubbermint (ours and others) keeps monkeying when it starts and ends and it creates a constant headache for computer maintenance people.
