A few folks around my area (KY) are installing UV lights in their HVAC systems for mold and bacteria control. Anyone have any experience in their effectiveness? Comments?

I think hospitals use some form of UV for sterilizing operating rooms, but I expect there are certain details to be aware of.
*I bet you would need A LOT of UV energy to be effictive at the flow rate that your HVAC is going to be blowing stuff thru there. Is this a system that is commercially available that is being installed? Or is it some home-made thing that someone made after reading about Hospitals in Popular Mechanics?
*I saw them on Honeywell's web site and a couple of other web sites the are allergy/air quality related. Thanks for responding.
*Alan, very common and effective practice. They are typically installed so that they illuminate the A-coil and stop moss from growing there. Make sure a mirror or something is installed so that both sides are illuminated. It also kills stuff flying by - like dust mites, etc.-Rob
*I can believe that UV light is very effective in keeping a surface free of plants, animals, and fungi. But it would have to be a huge UV source to nuke stuff as it passes by. Would that dust mite be done in by a fraction of a second of sunlight? Maybe if it lands on a filter and get a long dose while there. -David
