I have an old attic (whole house fan) that the belt on it is bad.
I tried gettting a replacement at the local hardware store and autoparts. But I was not sure if they where finding the right match or not. The hardware store had a sizer that you stretched the belt on, but not know which series it was I was not sure how to read it.
Since I got home I was able to do a little search on Gates website and it apears to be a 4L series, 1/2″ wide by 5/16″. But it only measures about 03″ high, but that might be do to the wear.
I figured that I would immediately have a replacement based on the markings, but no luck.
It has Hunter Fan BV-3011A. But Hunter Fan does not make any whole house fans any more.
Then a Gates logo and 23Y24. I thought that was the Gates part number, but if so they have must have changed them.
Then pat numer and made in the USA. Then a 43 which might be the year as that is when the house was built.
Any body familar with V belts that can decode the 23Y24?
I would like to replace it tomorrow and not wait until the industrial supplier is open monday.

I did find that it might also be an A section. That A and 4L where the same cross section dimensions, but that one use the outside leght of the belt and the other the inside lenght.

I too have one of those, attic fan. They turn relatively slow. All I did was find the length, which it sounds like you already had when you put it on the belt checker thing. At the auto parts store look at all the belts at that length and find the closest one in design of "V", width, etc...... I figured if it wasn't a vehicle close is good enough. If there is any slack, some of that can be taken out by the motor mount screw holes. No?
Also, I hav never tried one but what about one of those adjustable belts people use for power equipment? The ones that look like links. You can probably get one at a woodworking site.

Once I figure out that it was a 4L series I went back to the hardware store and figured out how to use their sizer. But the old belt was in such bad shape it was hard to tell. Could have been a 61 or 62".Tried the 61" next to the old one and it appeared to be a tad 2 small. So I got the 62" and it fit fine.Figured out how to use the sizer to tell what series belt that it was too..

For those of you with the whole house fans how do you like them. I have an old brick house with paster straight to the brick. It can get pretty warm in the the summer. Not sure how it would help in the winter. Rather cold up in Minnesota in the winter and I am still trying to get things tightened up. I would like to avoid the ac install for a few yrs if possible. I need to redo the ductwork as well which is a bunch more research to do.
I have one in my own house.I really like it. In my area the whole hosue fan is better than AC for about 4 - 6 weeks in early summer and a couple of weeks just after summer..

I love it but.....
I can only enjoy it a very small amount of time. I am in the south.
During the summer the louver inside the house is uninsulated. It sweats as a result. I lose energy. In the winter your heat will escape through the louvers. I feel the problem with the system is the louvers inside the house.
I finally filled in the "box" or intake to the system with cellulose insulation. Essentially I can't use it any more.
That said, I love them! I slept better with it running, kinda like white noise. You can barely crack the windows and let her rip and you will get ample airflow.
I guess it depends on where you live and the environment.
Prior to airconditioning in the south I would say you are crazy if you didn't have one. Other than that, what you would gain for a very short period of time would be lost the rest of the year.

Look at the left hand side of the site and look under belts and cables, then look under V-belts/ fractional-HP
You can then under belt size pick the 4L and go through the motions......
Hope this helps!
