Cooking oil will go rancid and stink the place up. Instead, use mineral oil. It's clear, so it looks like water intead of yellow urine. This way you also don't have to flush if you show the apt.

An apartment that's vacant for long enough to evaporate the traps is a loss of income that should be a much bigger problem than the dry traps. Where is this? Around here, apartments never stay vacant more than a few weeks. If it were mine, I'd certainly check on it at least once a week, and run some water to keep the traps full.

Antifreeze that is used in mobil homes, RV etc. I think it's safe for drain systems, septic, potable water systems. I've used it to winterize a vacation home. in Mid Mich.
