I need to install metal roofing on my boat dock.
It is new construction, truss framed “L” shaped hip roof with 3/11 pitch. How can I lay out the valley cut so that the valley edges are perfectly straight? I am using a “machine shed” panel, not architectural.
Also any advice on 26g vs 29g steel?
Thanks for your input, Bob

The 26g would have to be stiffer, wouldn't it? Are you going to cut the valley in the field? Lots of times you can order that stuff precut, and with what can be done with computers today, they can probably get it right. If not, you can cut 26g steel with regular snips. Tack the pieces in place, and snap a line if you have to. - jb
*Use a nibbler or ametal blade in a skilsaw , pop a line 2 in, in from the center of the valley iron and measure to this from the point of lap. kk
*Gat a cordless steel cutting circular saw from panasonic. I was stunned how well this saw works, and have been slow to return it due to other handy uses. A fine grain file will eliminate any burrs left by the saw. Tinsnips seems like a painful and tiring proposition.-Rob
*Bob,Although this is an Australian site it may have some info for you. I seeclick here they recommend cutting sheet from the back if using a metal saw, to avoid hot swarf embedding in the coating.
*Bob: Call Dynamic Fastener they have the blades Rob is talking about. You can buy the blades 4-3/8" thru 14" from them. We are using the 7-1/4" blade on electric saws. Works as good as Rob says. The blade is called Tenryu "steel pro" it is on page 24 of their 1999 cat. The blade is from panasonic. We use the Kansas City Office 1-800-821-5448. The price sounds high but buy it. Worth every penny.Ron PS tell them the thickness of metal you are cuting as they have blades for 18ga. to 3/16" and 18ga. & lighter.
