We are in the process of putting on an addition to our house with a ridge line perpendicular to the existing structure. The question is how best to create the valley between the old and the new. We are going to be doing an open valley with ice and water shield beneath. Can we just peel back the shingles on the old part along the valley? Or, do we have to reroof that whole side? I hate to replace the whole thing because we just did it a year ago, but I will if that is the only way to have a dry roof. Thanks for your help!

Amy, there is no reason to re roof the whole house. Just find the area where the new roof will meet the old and tear off the roof at that point(you will want the new roof sheeting to set directly on the sheeting on the original roof). At this point remove just enough roofing to install the ice and water shield in the valley. From here on out install your roof as you would if it were all new.
*You can either chalk a line and utility knife cut back, then slip in the metal flashing, or chalk a line, pop a few shingles back to where they are out of the way, and build/ice guard/flash and re-shingle! They aren't that hard to get up. Either way, or a different way, planning can help avoid replacing year old shingles. Jeff
*Snap a line where both valleys are to land. Using a flat bar and a hook knife remove one full shingle (3 tabs)from each course along this line.If you do this at about 7:00 in the morning when the shingles are still very cool it will take about 20 minutes per valley.Orderly and logical dis-assembly will make laying the new valley a lot faster.Stephen
*If you need to, water the old shingles to cool them down makes lifting apart a breeze if 7:00 a.m. is too early for you. Mark
