Builders,
At the design office we are having a discussion over where to indicate to put the vapor barrier in the floor over a garage space. The area is a living space that is over the garage. We want to glue and screw the subfloor to the floor joists. What is the proper way to do it.
Thanks,
Bob

I can't wait to hear from the pros on this one. More opinions around here about vapor barrier than the Middle East conflict. There are a few things to know first. Is the garage heated, and what climate area are you in? Up here in Ontario the space over an unheated garage would require R-24 insulation or more followed by 6mil poly vapor barrier stapled onto the joists, followed by the subfloor of choice screwed into those joists by code.
It is assumed to be an unheated garage space and it is in California around Lake Almanor. From the clients conversation it is fairly high up in the mountains.
Personally I would just insulate the floor and only have the foil facing up to the living space.
In your climate theres no need for poly vapor barriers if thats what you were infering to do.
Be sure the joists are dust free beore gluing and screwing..Personally I like polyurethane glue even though it may be overkill.
Be warm, be strong
