I am going to be installing new vinyl tile over an existing T&G plIwood floor. I was going to install a layer of 1/4″ tempered hardboard over the ply to regain a smooth surface, and patch with a latex floor prep.
Fellow worker indicated that I was crazy to use tempered hardboard (the same stuff pegboard is made of) as an underlayment– Seems to make sense to me– the stuff is the right thickness, hard, cheap, and easy to work with. I was planning to attach to the plywood with a troweled on bed of construction adhesive and screws at about one foot on center– any recommendations??

Anthony,
Peg board is NON tempered hardboard. There is a big difference. Do not attempt to use non tempered hardboard as an underlayment, or you'll be ripping up the new vinyl tiles as well as the underlayment in short order.
Hardboard and 1/4" luan plywood are the absolute world's worst underlayments (in my area at least). I remove a lot of damaged, buckling flooring, and lo and behold underneath the vinyl is 1/4" luan or hardboard. I rip it all out, replace with either 3/8" or 1/2" BC fir plywood, and install new vinyl flooring.
Your region may be a bit different, but I would find out from some other sources if this underlayment is a good thing in your neck of the woods.
Just a thought...

*Your best bet for selecting an underlayment would be to check to see what the manufacturer recommends. Hardboard should NOT be the way to go. If I had to info to go on, I'm go with the plywood. Definatly not hard board, and defiantly not yuan.
