I need some advice. Soon I will be replacing the existing roof shingles on a 5 1/2 pitch colonial in Ohio. It will be a tear-off. Replacement shingles will be of the 30 year varity. Existing are two Velux roof windows. About 30X16 give or take. They were installed on the home when constructed. They have been in place about 16 years. There are not any problems with them now, nor have there ever been.
Would you guys replace the roof windows? Reflash as needed? What are your thoughts. I see the current Velux warranty is 10 years. How long are they lasting out in the field? Thanks. Mike L.

The first Veluxes I installed are getting to be 20+ years old now. As many as I've handled, the only flaw I can imagine is that the rubber gaskets might start getting brittle from UV exposure, but I haven't actually witnessed that. I'm a stickler for replacing flashing that's not lead or copper when I reroof, so if I were doing it, I would insist on replacing the flashing package. I've never actually reroofed anything with Veluxes already there. We normally replace other skylights encountered with Veluxes.

You should be able to save and reuse everything provided the flashings don't look like swiss cheese. If not I'll come take them out and use on my house.
Velux did not use any exsposed rubber so it should all be in good shape. Anderson always had exsposed rubber. #### system they had ( anderson)
I thought roof windows were for a much steeper pitch. You sure they aren't skylights?
New flashing kit is only $75 and might not even be needed, depending on how it was used and how carefully they tear the old roof off.
In re-roofing have them wrap up sides of the curb/frame with ice and water shield before replacing flashing. That is a great help and was not so common 15 years ago.
