Anybody had any success with any of the high end pop-up vents, like what Thermador and others sell?

Heat and smoke want to rise. Downdraft is working contrary to this natural tendency and it is never as effective as an overhead hood. We replaced our Jenn-Air cooktop because the downdraft vent was never very effective, even on the highest fan setting. The very expensive systems with pop-up inlets might be marginally better, but why bother if you can put in an overhead vent hood?
Agreed TJK
Our Jenn air is working against nature. It is "OK" on the rear burners close to the pop up. But maybe only 50% on the front burners. ie: the ones we use all the time.
We have a dual-fuel (gas cooktop electric oven) thermadoor in our peninsula, with the three-speed pop-up vent.
It works pretty well on the back burners, though there's enough air moving around that it does change the way the burners burn a bit.
It's essentially useless on the front burners, but given the choice, I prefer having it over a huge vent hood in this location.
Like the others said.
Make sure you have the shortest and straightest possible duct run to the outside.
