Vented Facia

I would like to provide eaves venting for a hip roof by removing the existing gutters, cutting a 1-1/2″ slot at the top of the facia board, installing a roll-type shingle-over vent and nailing on another facia board. Anybody try this? Is there a specific venting product for this purpose? Any reason it wouldn’t work? Responses please!!
