I’d appreciate advice on how to deal with a situation I am running into at the top course of vinyl siding.
I’m using double-4 siding. Typically the last full piece will be a few inches from the bottom of the soffit, and I install undersill trim directly under the soffit, make the necessary cut, punch it and snaplock it into the undersill. Nice and neat.
The situation I am running into all along the overhang at the rear of the house (about 68 ft. long) and other places as well, is that the last full piece of siding terminates too close to the soffit to get the undersill in there. The top of the nail hem just touches the soffit.
The soffit is all installed already. The 8″ coursing cannot be changed. I know you have some room to work the coursing, but it already matches coursing at other inside/outside corners where the soffit is higher. Too late to move the starter strips.
I’m sure that you pros run into this situation all the time. Any suggestions on how to top off?
Thanks,
John

cut the interlock off the bottom of another piece, snap it on, and secure it with little bitty nails, the correct color of course.
or use caulking (flextra) in the interlock before snaping it in make sure not to put a bead to close to a drain hole at the bottom of the piece.
This is what I did. It worked fine and looks great. Thanks for the help.
I am glad I could help
Is your undersill single or double? try using the double undersill. You can then slide the wider butt of the siding up in and it will hold it out more like it should be.
I don't know if that makes any sense. But try double undersill it should help you.

Thanks. The problem is that if I install the double undersill, then I cannot nail the last full course. The top of the nail hem will totally cover the double undersill.

I always use J and U-T at the top. This allows you to cheat the U-T down enough to snap in your last 8" piece.
If you take a utility knife and score under the nail flange as far up as the blade will reach you can get 8-1/2" out of that last course.

Thanks. This sounds like a plan. Thanks for the tip about cutting off the lock.

and to add to what Stelletto said, you can even get wider than normal 'J' channel - I forget but I think it's around 2.5".
A trick I picked up about 2 years ago is to take a pair of needle nose pliers and slightly crimp the the bottom of the piece of vinyl about every two feet. The crimp is made from the back side and the only thing that gets crimped is where the interlock curls over.
It can be a little tricky snapping it in place because you have to push where the crimp is. But once it is in place it stays there and it looks good and you can not see the crimp.
It sounds like you will have to finish with a small piece at the top. Do the same thing.
You might want to put a few trim nails below the nail tab to keep the piece against the wall at the top. We use a shooter for this.

Thanks
Try using a piece of D-5 for that top course. It'll only be slightly noticeable @ the corners.
