Hi,
I bought a couple vix bits made by hempe, a number 5 and a number 9.
My question is, are vix bits supposed to pre drill the hole completely?
The reason I ask is that the springs in these bits are so strong I can hardly press them down and when I do only about an eighth of an inch of the bit protrudes. Do I just not have them adjusted right, or what?
Any advice would be appreciated.

C, the sleeve should move back into the body roughly 3/4 in the common models. The spring is generally very tough and many people could not push the sleeve that far with their fingers. If the bit is high in the sleeve and the sleeve is bottoming at 1/4 travel, then you can adjust the bit position by loosening the grub screw and letting the bit slide down until the point is even with the bottom of the sleeve. If it looks right but just won't move, then it's most likely chips caught in the mechanism and a little clean-up will fix it.
I wouldn't mess with the spring unless it really is a necessity: you can anneal the spring with a lighter.
*Are those vix bits sized actually for #5 and #9 screws? I have some boxes of those altho obviously they are odd sizes. I've run into some situations with older 4" butt hinges where it seemed that the only screws that fit correctly were the #9 - #8 was too small for the countersink recess in the leaf and #10 stood proud. Am I correct about this application of #9 wood screws?
*Ken, I am not sure I can check. I have'nt used them much. I was reminded of my question and thought I would post it on here. I need to check them out more thoroughly.
