Wainscoting on Bathroom Ceiling

I was curious to get input and feedback on installing wainscoting on a Master Bathroom ceiling. I would probably go with some standard pine, covered with either shellac or satin poly. Then some stain-grade crown molding around the perimeter.
I am not opposed to oak, but it is not as readily available, and of course, the cost.
Would I run into any mildew problems with either the poly or the shellac? I do get mildew from time to time on the paint that is there now.
I am just looking to do something different and give the room a new look.

We did our house in 1x6 beaded southern white pine. We used Cabot water base stain base as a whitewash. Brushed it on and did not wipe off. The knots bleed through for a beautiful look in our opinion. We have it in the bath and did not put any poly or anything on it. In 10 years of use there is no problem even in the shower area. I did wire the fan with the light so it is on anytime the light is on.
Don't know why you couldn't do as you're suggesting, although if there's an existing mildew problem, it won't go away by putting something over it. Id be inclined to seal the back side of any wood applied to bath ceiling.
Best bet is to address why the mildew's there in the first place, solve that and you've got less to worry about.
Is there an exhaust fan that works and is used?
Everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay, it's not the end.
I don't get what you're proposing to do. Wainscot is paneling installed on the lower third of a wall, sometimes as high as the bottom half, and usually capped by a chair rail and bordered on the bottom by baseboard.
It sounds like he's describing either beadboard or tongue and groove material.

no way to tell yet from the words he has used.

Ok. Sorry. Tongue and groove beadboard.
DW and I have been discussing that same thing. I'm a little hesitant about the aesthetics of it. Could get awful busy, with the linear lines.
Given that you are concerned about a moisture problem, and this is a bathroom, look into the Azec version of that material

It is not possible to put wainscot on a ceiling. The term refers to the location the material is placed, so when you take it off the lower wall and puit it on the ceiling, it becomes a ceiling material.
There are three different styles of materials used as wainscot, so I don't know which you are talking about. Raised panels, beaded board, or V-groove T&G. All have been used on ceilings just fine for varying effects in different circumstances.
