designing a 15′ I 20′ family room at the lower level of two story residence with a walk able redwood deck on the FLAT roof. using a built-up roofing material (not sure which type) with some type of custom built redwood panels on sleeper or with the sleepers as part of the panels (probably 4 panels for this size roof). reason for panels is so the client can sweep the roof and also for ease of repairs if needed.
there will be a 2.5 foot overhang and somewhere, along this length, ill place the railing. if need be, some of this overhang, at the outside fascia can be open.
I was talked into doing this by a contractor who knows I don’t like putting flat roofs anywhere unless absolutely needed because of design. it’s a personal favor to him.
anyone know of a great proven way to handle this?

There are several vinyl roofing systems designed for this job. They are ususally installed by franchised operators - check the yellow pages. Duradek (sp?) is one name I know. They also supply railing systems. I don't know anything about how one syustem compares to another.
