I’m doing some framing on an old house and have run into a curious situation. The walls appear to be set about 3/4 inches inside of the outer edge of the deck. What they did was rack the walls with horizontal 1 x 6 planks at the bottom and top of walls. This brought the sheathing even with the outside edge of the deck. They then used vertical 1 x 12 boards all around, then wood bevel siding nailed to that.
I’m installing some new wall sections with new windows, etc and will be siding all around. What I’m thinking is to take off all the sheathing and install one layer of 23/32 osb (or reuse the 1 x 12 pine boads currently in place). I’ll then housewrap it and install hardie siding.
If I only use one layer of sheathing, then the outside of the sheathing will be flush with the outside of the floor deck. Is that how it’s normally done? I was just curious if the standard practice is for the sheathing to be flush with the edge or if the sole plate of the wall was flush and the sheathing outside the deck footprint.
Thanks,
Jon

I'm not understanding why you'd want to remove the existing sheathing. Doesn't sound like there is anything wrong with it. Norm is to have the sheathing tie walls and rim joist ( deck framing) together
