We are getting ready to tile the splash area around a whirlpool tub. The area has durock board installed, however, drywall mud was used in the finishing process, and the area has been primed (for paint), and painted with 2 coats of bathroom paint (Sears). We have received comment from people in the industry that we need to tear it out and reinstall concrete board (no drywall mud ever), to its fine go ahead and put the tile on. We don’t anticipate that this area will see “lots” of water, since there is no shower involved. Your comments and past experiences would be appreciated.

Try it!
*You might float a thin coat of durabond over the top. The stuff is waterproof, but hard so you can't easily sand.Dennis
*So, as I understand it, you have Durock installed on the walls, topped with drywall mud and two coats of paint? On this you want to install tile?Well...I guess it be alright. Make sure the paint is well bonded though. Drywall mud--gypsum based--and thinset mortar--portland based--are incompatible as far as bond. As long as the paint stays on the wall you'll be okay. Actually, this would be a job for Type II mastic. If you use mastic, you would not have to be concerned with the incompatibility thang.
