My wife and I are fixing up her family’s 1912 farmhouse located in northwest Georgia. The exterior walls have been stripped back to the studs for a total rewire job and insulation. There is no exterior sheathing; just shiplap siding on full-size 2×4 studs. I plan to use fiberglass batts with a vapor barrier. The attic already has some blown-in insulation, which I plan to add to. We are going to reinstall the original 1×4 T&G beaded board on the inside. Do I need to put something like sheetrock, plywood, OSB, etc over the studs before I put the bead board back up? My thoughts are that this extra layer will result in a more airtight wall. Any layer under the bead board will require that the door and window jambs be extended, but that will not be much of a problem considering everything else we are doing.
We would appreciate any suggestions on the extra layer and the insulation as well. Thanks
