Dear Experts,
Has anyone of you built or live w/ a super long (16′) wall unit? The proposed max height (39″) of the enclosed storage/cabinets on the lower part to house horizontal files and in the center a pop up tv. Of the 39″, 2″ is to be marble to create a nice top. The upper part of the unit is for display; just glass shelves. Crown moulding at the ceiling finish it off w/ lights tucked away. Floor to ceiling is 8′.
Anyway, our carpenter( nice guy) kind of jumped the gun and built the doors before we had agreed on the tv that would go in. (We like the 42″Panasonic plasma that has built in speakers.) The doors he made are 27″ high and I don’t know how wide. He has to build new doors now? The lift for the tv needs 37″ to do it’s thing. Why is this so distressing for him? Why can’t he use the doors he made already? Is this madness? Turns out he was planning a 34″ max height. These 5″ are freaking him out. When I ask him these questions he just keeps insisting that he has to make new doors. The unit hasn’t gotten any wider. Any suggestions for Vern?

For me if its going to contain a stereo, TV, microwave, oven, double oven, etc. I want the brand name, serial number and manufactures specifications in my hand before I order or build anything. This process has always worked for me.

Three sentences, and you had to edit three times?
I agree. Whenever I am doing anything that incorporates any kind of appliance, I want as much info as possible before I do anything ... and having the actual item is even better.
Whenever you are asked if you can do a job, tell'em "Certainly, I can!" Then get busy and find out how to do it. T. Roosevelt
You ought to see how many times I check measurements.

Thank you M&D, but any ideas for old Vern? Does any one know of any nifty lifts that require less than 37" to do their thing? The marble guy suggested removing some of the flooring. Is that done? For me, 39" is a bit tall. I'm still hoping for suggestions from all you in the know........

Gab,
Auton makes a bunch of different lifts. How tall is TV?
KK
Thanks KK. The tv is 29.8 " high. I'd love to go for the other fellows suggestion but, my significant other "really wants, must have" a pop up tv. We'll check Auton.

Your base cabinet sounds like it is too tall. Why not mount the plasma TV on the wall above it? build one section without the glass shelves and make 4 doors bifold that match the base cabinet doors to hide the TV.
BTW, When I build a cabinet the last thing that gets made are the doors.
Doors built last fit best. And can be built to compensate for casework quirks.
I never met a tool I didn't like!
Its his job. I don't figure I should be telling him how to do it, especially second hand through you. He will figure out what is right in his mind and what he is willing to do as the craftsman. The piece will have Vern's name on it. Too many variables to just shoot in the air.
