anyone know of a good way to paint over wallpaper? weve steamed most of it off but i think the installer used real glue and its taking far too long to remove. could i skim some drywall mud around the rough edges then use a good oil based primer? would that hold? any input would be helpful thanks

IF, and only if...
you like funky faux finishes...
When I stripped and repainted my dining room wall, two walls in particular were left in quite poor shape. Paper and glue gone, but what was left was pitted, torn, etc. After sealing that, I took advantage of the crappy condition and did a color-washed finish that made the wall look like old plaster. The scars now look attractive. But of course, when faux finishes are out of style, I will have to figue out how to get a smooth lovely surface to paint again."when the pendant moon in the leafless treeclings and sways like a golden bati sing its light and my love for theeours is the zest of the alley cat"-"The Song of Mehitabel," Don Marquis, 1927
Vinegar wipe on let sit 5 mins. scrape
Or the drywall might not have been primed before hanging the wall paper.
Most wall paper books have liners you can buy to help smooth things out, some are, I think, paintable.
You said that you got most of it off, well I would take the time to get the rest off. I know from experience that it is a pain in the . . . Takes a lot of time, but the solution of a skim coat, sand, prime etc. takes a lot of time too.
Can't help with the easy way out - painting over. Bad idea, don't do it. To remove the wall paper, you need three things - a "wall tiger", tsp in a spray bottle and a paint scraper. Score the surface with the wall tiger, spray on the tsp and let it sit for about 10 - 15 minutes, scape off. Its messy but it works.
thanks for all the advice, i ended up doing it with DIF and alot of elbow grease!! I now officially hate wallpaper! Next time, i wouldn't mind trying the vingar or the hair conditioner, just to see what happens. thanks again.
