I’m designing a new raised living room ceiling and want to do Craftsman-style box beams about 17′ long, 2’o.c. Does anyone know of some good source material that shows construction detail and installation tips? For instance – What are some good woods that can be stained to match light stained pine window casings? Has anyone every seen light “orange peel” texture on plaster ceilings between beams? A friend suggested using burlap as the textured ceiling between the beams. Has anyone tried this and how does it look painted?

I don't know how to post any drawings and I don't know off hand where you might find any drawings. My understanding of box beams is that the structural member is covered on three sides by a secondary wood. Therefore, why couldn't you use pine to match the window casing? (Although, there wasn't alot of pine used in A&C)
*David,Re light texturing: one possibility is the fabric used by Glidden as part of their Insul-aid product. It comes in long, wide rolls; you apply a heavy layer of paint, embed the fabric, and apply more paint. It leaves a very light textured effect, possibly too light for your needs. (Also, paint coverage, sg ft/gal is very low, somewhere in the range of 50 sg ft/gal, if I recall correctly (from more than 10 years ago)and it is a very "regular", woven pattern.I suspect that burlap would be very difficult to apply, but have never tried it.Box beams are an engineered product, I'd want an engineer or good structural contractor doing the design.Bob
*David,Building them is easy. You make a plywood substrate and cover it with your finished lumber. Either 45 the outside corners or let the sides hang down about a 1/4".The last real Arts & Crafts style house we did was all verticle grain fir. After the painter got done with it it looked like cherry.Rich is right......you don't find a lot of pine in real Arts & Crafts interiors. If your matching pine windows, I'd stay with that species throughout. Ed. Williams
