I am looking for a whole house-water filter. The only one I’ve found costs around $4000.00.–A bit steep for what is basically 2 plastic tanks, full of sand, activated charcoal, and potasium. Any help would be appreciated.

W. W. Grainger. Aqua-pure units, stainless steel sumps with one or two filters per unit. Plan on replacing the filters every four weeks minimum. It gets to be a pain. I use 5 micron pre-filters and activated charcoal filters after. If you are determined to go whole hog, you can buy large water softener sized units that will recharge themselves. Expect to spend about 2,000. 4,000 is too much profit margin if you can do the work youself.

*4000? You could have thousands of gallons delivered to your door for that much. visit http://www.plumbingsupply.com/filters.htmlWhole house filter for $240. We have the undersink American Plumber model, CR top rated, and it works very well. The first Q is do you need a filter and why? Paranoia is not an adequate reason. We drink a great deal of water and the main function of the filter is to block chlorine and POSSIBLY other nasties that we don't know exist ... a simpler and more environmental alternative to bottled water. I'm less concerned about what's in bathing water (and especially toilet water). But order bottled water before spending thousands!
