Water heater heat trap – worth retrofit?
Does anyone know if it is worth the $10 per fitting to put in heat trap fittings on a gas water heater in Southern California?
Will heat traps really prevent hot water from filling up the cold line in that bathroom upstairs from the water heater?
Thanks,

It's certainly worth it (and generally required by code) on a new install or heater replacement. Retrofitting would cost in excess of $100, if you hired it, making it marginal.
Won't totally prevent the hot water in cold water pipe problem, but will reduce it significantly.
