I’m thinking about replacing 4 pre-1990 toilets with newer 1.6 gal./flush units, and the shower heads with low-flow fixtures. My house has a septic tank, and I’m wondering if the reduction in water will have any impact on the function of the system. I’d love to lower my water bill and conserve water, but don’t want to mess up the delicate ecological balance in my septic tank.
Thanks for any advice!

I was under the impression that less water was better for the septic system. You might just be extending its life.
Just curious, did you consider dual-flush toilets?

Thanks for the help!
Yeah, in general the less, the better.
Cflbob, having three ladies in the house I have found that not flushing any toilet-paper down the comode really has improved the septic tank flow-out. Emptying the garbage cans is my day job(better then replacing the lines) stinky
That is stinky.Get a bidet, dude.
Thanks to all for the info!
TP in the trash can? That is nasty.
We follow the "If it's yellow, let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down" creed in our house - although in the summer, we flush the darker yellow since it's stinkier then.
Yes less water is better for the septic.
Best thing for a septic is to take a dump in it.
Good poo = good bacteria.
& don't use powder laundry detergent.
