I’m full of bath questions this week!
I’m looking through the Taunton Bath Remodelling book. It talks about tiling a tub surround and using a membrane behind the backer board. In this case, they recommend tar paper.
So, two questions:
1) Should the tar paper be sealed to the tub at the bottom (where it meets the tub). If so, how?
2) If I’m tiling the ceiling as well above the shower, is tar paper sufficient, or should I consider a rubber membrane for that part (due to the rising steam)?

I thought I'd bump this question to see if there are any thoughts and add a new one while I'm at it.
Right now, I'm going to go with Tar Paper/felt along the sides of the tub, and plastic over the top. I'm still not sure what to do with the felt at the tub, though. How-to's I've read seem to suggest that you overloap the tub, tile, then trim + caulk.
My second question is those plastic shower 'niche' boxes. It's a 14" x 14" box that you use to create a shampoo/soap shelf in the shower.
The tile store had a ton of these and I bought two, but no one at the tile store really knew what to do with them. Are these supposed to go behind the back board? Am I suppose to use some sort of waterproof membrane with it? Does one just apply tile directly to the plastic?
