I bought a high output swirl cage fan yesreday at Sam’s club and looked for misters today but I didn’t look on the irrigation isle so I didnt find what I wanted.
Been freezing gallon jugs and 1/2 gallon jugs of lemonade and rotating them from freezer to cooler.
Going to carry several shirts and towels to work tomorrow and keep a couple wet and in the cooler.

It's a fun read.
Only way I know to do it is to try to avoid the sun.
Like work on the south and west side of a building in the morning, and the north and east side after noon.
Or doing something where you'll have full sun during the morning hours, and try to find save shade work for afternoon.
Obviously it doesn't always work - Sometimes there's only one thing that can be done at a particular point in time.
hire bob for $1.98 for the day. Next sit your aircondtion pick me up truck :)
I can tell ya what I will do as we have 100 days all next week.
The bass fisherman here buy a strip of absorbant somthing . I have three I think. We get them from walmart . You soak them in ice water and tie them around your neck. they slowly drip out moistening your shirt . You exchange every time you go to the cooler.
Starting at 5.30 am this week and working till 12 noon. Thats a day in the heat till it gets some cooler.
Take advantage of shade and fans .
Take plenty of breaks .
The killer time though is afternoons . Ill be avoiding them.
Edit ; Here is some but mine are narrower.

Piffin and I touched bases on this lately in a different thread.
Start at 5:30-6:00 am if the neighbors are tolerant, be done by 12:00-1:00 in the afternoon.
I have been working in the heat and it's a pain in the butt. I have to wipe a mountain of sweat off my face to see my cut marks on a white piece of Azek. I am a very healthy active person. Standing at the chop saw sweating means it is freakin hot.
Around here 94 degrees and heat indexs over 100. So however you guys do it, be careful, drink lots of fluids and work in the shade as long as possible. I make my gameplans for the day that way.
Start the day on the roof or the sunnyside of the house, then as it starts getting to hot I do things on the shady sides or inside the houses I am framing. Nothing like a basement set of stairs when it's 100 degrees outside. :)Can't you hear the violin playing your song.
Get a law degree and work in an air conditioned office ;-)
"Get a law degree and work in an air conditioned office ;-)"i did that, and today i was having trouble painting doors lying flat on sawhorses, because i kept dripping sweat into the fresh paint. maybe the law degree didnt take.
Light loose clothing and lots of water. I love water, and Gatoraide.

I take more fequent breaks, plenty of water and Gatoraide as you suggest, and sometimes a 52oz. Mtn. Dew Slushie from the Kwik Trip...now that'll cool you down.Dhoh! Brainfreeze!
Them slushees kill me. If I have one that's all I want until I'm bloated like a tic.

I wear a wide brimmed hat. Long pants, a cotton T shirt and a shirt over that.
I take a cooler with plenty of water and Gatorade/PowerAde.
I take it easy.
I would add that I work more slowly, but I already work so slowly that I don't think there is much room to go slower.
I often think that I should get to work early so I can knock off early, but I'm just not a morning person. So I'm usually working through the afternoon.

funny, i was just searching the web earlier tonight, and found this.it's a terrycloth hat that you dunk in water, wring out and wear.don't know how to post a link. http://www.coolitheadwear.com
Similar hat here, plus some other items. I've tried the bandanas, they're not AC, but they do help.

Well the heat got to me last night finally. I have been working in the heat the last few days and didn't drink enough fluids or something.
I woke up at 2:00 am in a shiver, I couldn't warm up. I took my tempature it was 104 degrees. All my muscles are very tight and my head feels like it's in a bench vise.
I worked in the shade and was only in the sun to cut pieces so I didn't give it much thought. Well I was wrong again. I stayed home today for the first time since I can remember. I am going crazy just sitting here. I guess it's better than being outside. Can't you hear the violin playing your song.
I am home too. Face looks like a hockey mask. I have a hell of a week coming up ...soldering copper gutter with a nice 800 degree torch.
I gotta tell ya, any copper work in this heat is almost deadly.
I hope this damm swelling goes away soon, and the itch is all over my body now. Been icing down my eyes and can't really get motivated to do anything.
Get plenty of potassium in ya and B2,B6, and B12. Lots of C also. Force as much liquid ( no caffiene or alcohol) as you can stand and then drink MORE. Trust me.

Thanks alot for the advice, this hasn't happened to me before so I am in the dark about making it better. My problem is I run at work, I need to recut a piece I run back to the saw, I need something I run. In this heat probably not a good idea.
I just don't know how to slow down, I feel lazy when I take it easy. I need to wake up though. I wouldn't mind having today off at all, but my phone won't stop ringing. I am getting more backed up by the day.
I have no idea how you can wield a torch when it is this freaking hot out. I hope it pays you for the physical toll it takes on ya.
That picture you posted of yourself looked horrible, I can only imagine what it feels like. I had poison ivy once that swelled my eyes shut. So I can kind of relate. I remember how bad I wanted to itch my face and eyes it drove me nuts.
Get well soon. Can't you hear the violin playing your song.

I usually plan my days to stay out of the sun as much as possible. This weekend my chop saw happened to be in the sun.
I couldn't believe the tempature difference in the sun, probably 25 degrees hotter than in the shade where I was working.
It's the humidity that is the killer around here 95 degree temps with all the humidity that you can drink or breathe. Can't you hear the violin playing your song.

everybody here pours concrete at night, we been working 11 hours days since katrina. 6 am to 5:30. Tonight I go in at 1:30am for a concrete pour and work till 5:30 pm tomorrow. i am exhausted.
Stilletto,Don't mess around. If you have a temp of 104F and you're not under 20 years old, you need to get cooled off. Drink lots of fluids, yes, yes, yes. But also stay in air conditioning, get undressed, and take a cool bath. Take your temp again regularly (every half-hour until you see which way it's going, then every hour for a couple of hours, then every 4 hours for a day or so.If your temp heads upwards, or you start getting woozy, call someone to take you to an ER, even if it's 911. Seriously. Heat stroke IS an emergency, and it kills.Rebeccah
Thanks for the advice, I have been keeping an eye on my temperature and it's floating around 100 now. I haven't done a thing today but sleep in the AC. I went out to pick up blueprints for a job I was supposed to start this week, not sure if that is going to happen till next week.
Can't you hear the violin playing your song.
Glad to hear it's coming down.Keep drinking the fluids -- you should be drinking so much that your pee isn't even yellow any more. In fact, that should be the rule when working in hot weather, not just when you've already got a heat injury. :)Rebeccah
The big thing is to get hydrated ahead of time. I drink water all day at work, and all night at home. You have to keep it going even when your not in the heat. It's kind of like watering the root system on plants. My goal is a gallon a day,it's not that hard. But it takes a little getting used to.

Funny how we are all different .
Some guys dont drink any thing but MT Dew . You know they arent drinking that much.
Some dont like water at all.
I have a close friend that only drinks ice tea and only carries a gallon per day . If we go hunting he will refresh it for nights.
Ive been noticeing the kid workers carrying power aide or what ever its called and other power drinks but they are only holfding a 20 onz bottle .
My H doctor told me to drown my self with water and all I could drink. That way heart food was enough. All I drink is water now and wont touch a cup of coffee . Sometimes a glass of tea at lunch eating out . I take a two gallon jug to work for my self with ice in it so I figgure Im drinking a gallon a day at work. 4 to 5- 20 onz bottles from the fridge in the evening . I love it and wont leave home with out a jug. I carry a gallon fishing and will empty it in the evening . But its 100 degrees in the evening right now .
Tim
One thing that you need to do is not to forget to drink some Gatorade while drinking all that water. Drinking all that water can make a person become hyponatriaemac, a reduction of essential minerals and salts in the blood.
I'll usually drink a couple of the pint bottles of Gatorade during the day while drinking about a gallon and half of water.Work smart, not hard!
Id never heard that . Course I am from the days of tap water and salt tablets.
Please drink lots of water and the gatoraide suggestion is a real must; or try propel... there are lots of water drinks out there that will replace electrolites and whatever the body emits during sweating... Also, when a child is dehydrated they get very sick and most times end up in emergency room where the docs fill them with electrolyetes which is found in pediolite at your local grocers, or pharmacies... Drink "pediolite" when your case is so severe you need it "NOW." It works, I have used it with my dogs as well as my children in this heat and it works...
me too on the old days off salt tablets , un-air condtioned plant I used to work at had salt tablet dispenser's on the wall around the plant DR has told wifey she needs more salt in her diet so shes taking salt tablets . only place she could find them was wallgreens and the pharmisist keeps them behind the counter , you have to ask .. (not cheap either )

Ah nothing like forming up a footer on nice dark shale with a beautiful reflecting oven of a 6 foot hi wall .Watch that rebar ..it gets hot! And keep those tools in the shade cuz that framing square will burn ur hand.
Got this headband with crytals in it. Put it in the freezer and tie that thing on and oh boy that feels good for 20-30 minutes.
Yeah were getting one of those 10X 20 party tarp and frames at tractor supply for $99.Will put thecutting station under there for some shade and cover from those pop up thunder storms.
Dont forget the job pooch! Ice in the water bowl and squirt the ground down good under truck where he likes to lay.

I know how you feel. It happened to me a couple years ago and I spent 2 days in bed with a headache that felt like someone hit me with a sledge. I never used to drink anything except at lunch, but since then, always have a cooler stocked with water, gatorade or powerade, and plenty of ice. If you're like me, if you don't work , you don't make anything, but just remember, your body is your most important tool. So take care of it so it lasts. Good luck to you man
It's been two days now with a fever and monster headache. Hopefully it subsides soon. I don't get paid for being at home so I work all the time.
This has opened my eyes, for the last five years I worked for the most part drinking only MT Dew and smoking cigarettes. I hardly ever take lunch break or any break for that fact. My guys take their breaks and lunch and I use that time to stay ahead of them. If I did take lunch it was to suck down another pop and a smoke then back at it.
I will now be taking lunches at least, I haven't had a pop in two days and have drank gallons of water. I plan on doing this the rest of my life, at the rate I was going my life would have been fairly short.
I appreciate all the advice I have gotten about this, I have taken it all in and am using it.Can't you hear the violin playing your song.
Now might be agood time to lose the cigarettes; I mean while you're making other changes.

Like they say in the Tour de France: What they eat and drink TODAY is to provide fuel for TOMORROW.Sounds like you had a cumulative deficiency.
In the summer, I wear a CamelBak Rogue. It's not that great to wear if its wall framing day, but on the roof, being the cutman or siding, pickup framing etc its great.
This is my 3rd summer with it. The difference between quitting fully hydrated and being parched is insane. I can't overestimate how much better I feel mentally when I have enough fluids.

Yup, unscented to.
Not it's not.Corn starch is a food product. Used to thicken soups and sauces.Baby powder is talcum powder. If you want to make a sauce out of yer arse sweat, go ahead and use that corn starch. ;o)BTW: those mira-cool products... The crystals they have inside them, can be found in some diapers as well. You can make your own bandanna with the crystals from a new diaper. And they definately make a huge difference. Also BTW: what heat ? Where I live, I have seen 5 days this summer where the temp got up to 75 or above. It is 55 right now. Yesterday it was less than 50 and raining. Right around 55 to 60 has been the average this summer so far.

I beg to differ . Not much though.
The cheap powders I think are but on to what the corn starch does.
First ya gotta have a clean butt . Thats up most critical. The corn starch will take chaff away lots better than talcum powder.
Been a corn starch user for years and years.
I even use corn meal. Gotta be a tough sombuck to use corn meal. <G>

Pretty much every time I have ribbed you about something, you have taken it seriously and responded either angrily, or confrontationally. It's like you have no idea what ribbing is. You take what is said as an affront or insult, and then you respond in kind.I'm not going to go searching back through a couple years worth of posts to find examples for you to then sit there and ask all over again, "what humor ?"It is what it is. Anyone who has been around here for a while and paid attention knows it. I'm not going to argue or defend the point any further.

Well , I had to do some research tonight and Ive been a little tied up.
So after further review;
I remember reading the same thing Gunner did and like him thought it was the same thing .
So I went to the medicine cabinet .
Ive got two ;
One is johnsons which says talic powder and scent
The other is a big bottle of Gold Bond medicated . Thats a bad deal right there and dont belong on no bodies butt. Might as well be a Jalapeno. Ive always regretted that purchase. However , it says ; well Im not gonna type every thing it says cause I cant pronounce it but its talic and a mentionable is ACID , the sombatches. Plus a addtion of menthol. Why would any one do that to some unexpectin soul?
Tim
Just so happens I've been doing a camera job at a Kroger supermarket the last couple of days. Today I checked out the baby powder. Some of it is talc and some of it is cornstarch.
Seems I've always grabbed the one that's cornstarch. That's what I always thought all of them were.
So what's better? Talc or cornstarch?

My vote for what it is worth is corn starch. Didn't think much about the differences until we got the yung'un in the house. Doctor said that talc powder will irritate nasal passages. Been having problems of juniors sinus drips and associated problems. Of course when I change him, more is better. I have used cornstarch around my skivvies area when I know I will be sweating profusely and has been working good for me. I have sweat to the point where I can barely walk by the end of the day.

Corn starch.
Talic dont do nothin but roll up in balls . I use box corn starch.

I've been on the roof for the last 10days... we kept a hose shoot'n up in the air mist'n us for several of those days...
but what works real well with your fan... is make something ... anything that will let you hang a 5gal bucket of water behind your running fan... make the smallest hole you can in the btm of the bucket to one side... so that you have a drip... not alot.. just a drip that will be sucked into the fan and blown out... that little bit of added water in the blow'n air will make you feel ALOT cooler...
i have most of this week on the roof... roof top deck... some siding ect.... and we have 100 plus days all week i think... wet rags on your neck and under your hat help alot too
just stay safe man... drink alot... rest often
p
"that little bit of added water in the blow'n air will make you feel ALOT cooler"
That might work somewhere that the humidity isn't already miserable high. I don't think it would fly around here.
Al Gore has dished out more whoppers than a drive-through at Burger King. [RNC spokesman Mark Pfeifle]
Water in ya, is better than water on ya.
While working on Forest Service and BLM fire crews it was an education on surviving hot temperatures while working hard. The main key is drinking water--lots of water--a couple galons of water each day for a 12 hr. shift.
In 10 years of fire fighting, not one of the heat exhaustion cases, mild or serious, our crew came into contact with were drinking enough water.
Just as importantly, if someone is slightly dehydrated they can't be as productive. Many times in the late afternoon carpenters get tired and feel warn out when it's really dehydration rather than hard work.
drink a mixture of water and gatorade - lots and lots of water
ice packs in your hat, or velcroed to your wrists
run cool water over your wrists
eat a large dill pickel
I also like a salad and fresh pineapple for snacks.
I fill an Igloo water cooler or similar with ice, water and halves of lemons, orange, limes, grapefruits, etc. More refreshing than just plain water and full of vitamin C.
Watch that Gatorade! Electrolytes good, vast quantities of high fructose corn syrup bad. That ain't a beer gut, it's a gator-gut! BTDT - LOL!
Can you stick a block of ice in front of that fan? That's the orginal air conditioning.
And those wraps that are soaked in ice water have the same gel beads that diapers have. But I don't know how to take advantage of that fact. The wraps are good, and you can put them directly into the freezer with water on them. Last a little longer that way.
BTW, never put them in the washing machine. You'll never get them to where they work again. Don't ask me how I know.
I am super heat sensitive, and I am no fun to be around when I get too hot (ask my wife...) My first means of defense is to keep the heat off of me.
The money move is a Tilley t-2 hat
http://www.tilley.com/detail.asp?catId=1&gender=u&extractBy=CategoryId&id=1&productNo=T2
I was in direct sun today, launching campers rockets (while they hid in the shade) and am still functioning. I also used it for laying down gravel base (4inch thick) decking and roof work.... Its also great for rowing the grand canyon. my favorite part about the hat is no need for sunblock on the face, and that makes it SO worth it.
a couple of companies make silk weight wicking t-shirts in short and long sleeve versions that tend to help in high humidity so it does not feel like you are wearing a wet blanket,
http://www.patagonia.com/web/us/search/esearch.jsp?OPTION=ESEARCH&N=0&special=both&Ntt=silk+weight+t-shirt
but in high heat, no humidity, a long sleeve oxford is the way to keep the sun off my pasty white skin....
The last trick in my book is to freeze my camelbak bladder the night before a big exposed outside job, and then wear the block of ice on my spine and let it slowly thaw (and keep sucking down the ice cold water)
http://www.camelbak.com
go to industrial and look at the sabre... simple....
Once it is over 95 I am sucking down 3-5liters a day... while in the grand canyon, I was up two about 2 gallons a day (8-10 liters) but, then the danger of two much water sets in... a little gatorade, tang or emer'gen c from these guys http://www.alacer.com/ I get mine at a local trader joes I do the ones with glucosamine because my joints are way older than my body (arthritis.... at 34...)
If I start to get stupid hot, the key things are to stop the activity and cool down FAST remove excess clothing and dump any cold liquids onto and into the person.... if the temp is 104 or higher call 911... the human body can handle being cooled fairly well and there are many stories of people surviving prolonged cold exposure, but too hot is really a quick way to end up dead....
and, dead is no fun.
