Would like to use western red cedar for stair treads. They will be 6×12 timbers and have to span ~96″.
Any experience to share reagrding cedar treads of that size and span? Or any span info relating to WRC?
Thanks

Will there also be risers? I think that 6x12 treads with no risers will be fairly bouncy, but with risers carefully attached they would be rigid enough.
WRC is fairly soft and will show wear fairly quickly, even from the construction process itself. People build a lot of decks with it anyway.
I assume you have some MASSIVE planks for stringers!
Wow. Those are some hefty treads. My initial feeling is that they will probably be stiff enough - if they are clear or close to it.
However, at 8', how many people are going to be on these stairs at once?
I don't see much room for risers with 6x treads, either...hmmm...I think we need more details.
I dabble in woodworking and built the front doors of my house out of Western Red Cedar. It is the softest wood I've ever worked with. Even laying a freshly planed board on a planer curl on the bench dented it. For my Craftsman style house it did not matter much, but be aware it is quite soft.
It does weather to an attractive appearance.
Also, I had a reaction to the dust, causing mild flu like symptoms that took me a few tries to associate with the wood. Later I found the wood on a list of wood toxicity and saw that it is more common to get a reaction to it than many other woods. If you check the archives in Knots you'll find that other people also report some trouble when around WRC sawdust.
WRC splinters sting more and will fester faster than "regular" splinters.
My project has a log staircase made from cedar. As soon as it was installed and I chased the bozo with muddy boots off from it, I covered the treads with plywood util construction is complete.
