Whaddya do?

hasbeen | Posted in Business on November 20, 2004 03:56am

Supposing:  You order a one piece shower tub before you ever start framing your house.  It’s not a standard size.  It arrives at your supplier in fine condition and their dufus help creams the thing with a fork lift before they get it into your truck.  They order another one.  It arrives when you absolutely need to install it.  You go to get it and it is damaged on one edge where the sheetrock will lap over, but there is still a chip in the acrylic surface that will show maybe a 1/4″ diameter spot.

It takes about three weeks to get another one.  It’s late October.

Whaddya do?

Don’t want to shock anyone, but the supplier in question was an outfit called Home Depot.  Anybody ever hear of ’em?

The ball is still in your court .

Call all suppliers in your area and see if they have one . If they dont , tell HD the only way you will take it if they send the tub doctor at their cost . If all else fails you could drive up to 300 miles and back to solve your problem. Stuff does happen and the last would be infortunate, but you are still in control.

You stop shopping there and support your local professional plumbing wholesaler, who may charge a little more has the staff to support you in return... with the goods you order delivered on time and in the condition you expect.

At this point, leave the 2nd damaged unit at HD and go to a wholesaler now. Chances are they can do a better job of getting you a new unit quickly. You can probably locate one by contacting the manufacturer of the unit you are trying to buy.

    Absolutely have to.

Set the unit, schedule the tub Doctor for the repair, no cost to you.  Finish the job, thank the tub Doctor for repairing where the plumber dropped the channel locks.

    what calvin said...and...

within the large picture of human misery,  a 1/4" chip on this unit rates pretty low...I'd probably install it and look at each shower to remind myself of the great comedy that is our existance....

Which is pretty much what I did, also keeping in mind the Hopi idea of avoiding anything that might appear to be "perfect" because such things are seen as sort of an example of hubris.

This happened last year, so time for action is long past.

ALL:  Thanks for the responses.  Every so often I think about what happened and wonder what I might do differently next time.

At the time, I wrote the store manager and got no response at all.  Since I was in the early stages of building, my primary response was to do lots more business with my local yard and some more with Lowe's.

I rarely notice the tiny bit of appliance paint that DW put on the chip.

Part of the problem was that the unit I ordered was only in stock in California.  It had to be shipped to Colorado.  HD said that takes three weeks.  I doubt it.

      ...what Calvin and David said.

I ran into the same situation...but I was using the "best plumber in town and he was using a well respected wholesale house. The first tub was installed and they found a crack in it a week later. They replaced it. Later, we noticed a damaged spot. The plumber said he could have that repaired. He did. It's not perfect, but neither am I.

blueWarning! Be cautious when taking any framing advice from me. Although I have a lifetime of framing experience, all of it is considered bottom of the barrel by Gabe. I am not to be counted amongst the worst of the worst. If you want real framing information...don't listen to me..just ask Gabe!
