Source control, ventilation, and filtration are the keys to healthy indoor air quality. Dehumidification is important too.

just killed one today.
used a sledge.
I've also cut them apart with an abrasive blade in a circular saw.
used to do work in way old rental apartments where the old tennents downstairs would throw a fit if U smashed one apart ... plus ... the building woulda fell down before the tub cracked.
dirty / dusty / stinky ... but effective.

One more vote for some ear protection. It's like being inside of a gong when it goes off. Or ringing the church bell with your head.'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb

Can it possibly be louder then DW when I come in the front door after a dirty days work. if so maybe I can use my selective hearing while I'm hammering away
thanks for the advice

I usually bust it up with a sledge.
BE CAREFULL, the shards are small, sharp and fly. Eye Protection a must.

Sledgehammer unless you need to accurately cut it for some project. Milwaukee Sawzall and some of Milwaukee's blades for cast iron. The porcelain will chip. Good luck.

If you're doing the demo, and the prima donna plumber and his pal the homowner are finishing.......
protect all things that are staying. Both big and small pcs of tub can fly off in all directions. One method is to cover the tub with a disposable tarp (never done it) while bashing. For the floor, lay down a pc of ply and tape it off to the perimeter.

sledge hammer is the way to go and what really works nice is to cover with a moving
blanket, keeps the projectiles away and definitely eye protection!
I like to use a splitting maul, breaks a little easier than a hammer.

I'm also a big hammer fan.
HOWEVER: have the client take down any pictures or wall hangings. Had a friend have to pay multiple $k for a crappy little stick figure drawing that fell and was damaged. Art scares me--some people have originals.

Take the blanket advice... heavy moving blanket is my choice. Winterlude, Winterlude, my little daisy,
Winterlude by the telephone wire,
Winterlude, it's makin' me lazy,
Come on, sit by the logs in the fire.
The moonlight reflects from the window
Where the snowflakes, they cover the sand.
Come out tonight, ev'rything will be tight,
Winterlude, this dude thinks you're grand.
If you knock a few tubs it will amaze you how many items in the house will fall, especially for nick nack collectors, or if it's wimpy 1970's interior partition wall construction. Don't forget about what's under, over and to all sides of the bath.
Even if you didn't cause something to fall, the client might be inclined to blame it on you when they see their uncle Erl's ashes spilled out of the ming dynasty vase. Everything's a rolls royce when it's broke.
