I think it would be interesting if BT’r s would post from time to time stuff they’re workin on.
Here’s what me and the kid did today, before and after. All cleaned up in the dumpster all the nails pulled.
Whad’ya think for an almost old busted up carp and his kid?
Interesting to me, that there is hardly a water stain, no rotten sheathing at all, and the shingle job was backed up with rosin paper!!
Drip caps and little crowns underneath are all shot………did they have to put 60 nails (serious folks) in each drip cap to hold the tin down?
Tomorrow we’ll break the corners back to facilitate patching them in. Maybe start a few courses. This is all we’re doing for now, just this side.
Oh, and it’s the SOUTH side, warm and sunny all day long!!
Cheers,
Eric

Nice work, Eric. Ain't it great to have some good, straight-forward work like that, in a nice, sunny location? Pretty old house, too. Makes it that much more fun.

I'll try to update this daily as work progresses.
It is an interesting ald house, built around the turn of the century. The current owner does not have a lot of respect for it's value as such, being that it is an investment property for him.
He thinks it's a Victorian, at least that's how he has it advertised for rent. And he's a contractor. Go figure.

Eric: Nice work.
I built this drum form and glued up the first of two curved handrails around it. I posted these same pictures in the gallery.

We've been getting rain and freezing rain. We generally don't make a practice of working in rain but to day was an exception. I'd read something about productivity going up in lousy weather. I would say that it would be true if my extension cords weren't constantly tripping. Were working on a string of town houses with 'new technology' Instead of drywall between units we actually have to form concrete. The forms are just 2x4 walls 12 inch o.c. with a wedge and pin system to reinforce the walls from blowing out. When ever we finish a floor we pour the walls below it. It's supposed to be good for sound insulation I have my doubts It also allows the builder to go indefinitely inbetween the two ends one town house is 34 units long with out your typical fire break. Neat system, but very labour intensive. Were just paying our guys doing this. You have to work cheap in the winter or you don't work. All the crap projects come up in the winter b/c no one would do them in the summer.
Did the 9+hrs for the pay-check (in the snow) then went 4 more hrs on the side Slamming 200 sq.ft of 2 1/4 # 1 oak, need the cash to pay for the addiction!
Don't you guys still have winter?
plenty ... need more and winter won't be here till next month some time....

Little slow today, drove around looking for a shingle thief, ripper, whatever it's called.
Went to HD and asked; response was Huh? Gees, ya think I was looking for some exotic mushrooms or something.
It was probably 9:30 or so by the time we got up on the scaffold. Broke bake the two corners.
Shingles came. Laid 30lb. felt over the flare. There was nothing before, only rosin paper long ago given up.
The kid laid up the double starter course. while I started putting one of the corners together. Amazing the curve you need to cut into the shingle for the flare.

I was looking around for something to measure my portland/ sand ratio then thought of a different aproach. I used a 5 gal compound pail. I made a mark at 7" and 10" off the bottom of the pail. Then filled sand to the 7" mark and then added portland on top of the sand to the 10" mark. Then dumped that into my mixing tub.
I'm not very familiar with Kerdi. Are they restricted by pan size? The shower I'm doing now is 40x60 inside pan

Put in about 7 hours today.
I worked the corners while sonny boy filled in.
Sometimes this stuff seems to fly up, and other times............
Those flared corners were quite time consuming to say the least. And the first few courses needed a bit of a push to snug down nicely.
No sun today and it was quite chilly!
EricI Love A Hand That Meets My Own,

I believe the Kerdi comes up to 48" x 48" and some smaller sizes, they now have one that replaces a tub, 32" x 60" or thereabouts.
Check out the Tile Experts site I gave you, they have a clear list of the Kerdi products and prices.
That mix you are using is rather rich; 2.33:1. Industry standards say 4:1. $
4sand, 1 portland.
I use bagged sand mix as no one around here carries the so called thick bed or dryset mix. I think it is rich as well, but seems to work ok for me.

Made bead moulding on my router table to go with the beadboard wainscotting and Shaker pegs for the large main hall.
drywall repair. hundreds of nail pops, and cornerbead tears all over the house. pays by the hour so I don't mind looking like I just crawled out of a flour mill.
Wrote up an estimate. Took two calls from people needing work done on their house. Met with cabinet guy about upcoming kitchen remodel. Pretty much just had an office day.
got pretty much nothing productive done ...
then felt a calling ...
ok .. was trying to avoid work ... so I decided today was the say to go and see how close to a match I could get on the existing doors from our local Construction Junction.
U can sell and buy old building materials.
Would have liked to match up the existing old doors for her new closet .. already set up as a set of frenchs ...
found the prefect book matched pair ... was hoping for an inch or soo too big ...
found the perfect pair an inch or so too small ... which isn't a bad deal ... the closet's already framed some weird nonstandard size ... instead of cutting down the doors I'mm just make the jamb to fit the new doors.
Here's what I had to match ...
ended up paying $45 with tax for the two, painted and not in bad shape at all.
The client will be thrilled.
aside from my size concerns ... which don't concern her ... they're an exact match.
not bad for a 100+ year old house.

Tried a new product. SW Duration interior . . . just came in. Man, I like. I don't know who thought they needed to have something above Cashmere in their paint line, but its the stuff. Since I was the first guy in town to buy it, one of the store managers came by this afternoon to look at it. He said wow, you have no overspray, how'd you do that? I said I rolled it. It was that smooth. Shazam. That's enough pluggin for them.
Workin on a basement, acutally about a day ahead of schedule now. happy about that. Everything starting to come together to look like something. Get the paint done, then its just letting the floor go in, plumber and elec finish their thing . . . and on to the next adventure!

And the view, you'll be able to see all the neighbors!
Doug
charlie-
nice work. that should be a really cool space when finished. I like your term "sniper tower"
one thing caught my eye, tho, and this really isn't a criticism-do you feel comfortable with that scaffolding around the top? I'd probably have set up some pump jacks or pipe scaffold.
The reason I ask is that I had a serious accident 20 some years ago from a scaffold failure, and would hate to see any one else go thru what I did.
I sure would have use pump jacks if I had a set...still looking for that job that I can justify the expense. I don't do enough elevation work to get a set...but I'm getting close....at least that's what I tell the wife...:) she controls the checkbook...
I lag a 2x8 to the house with a "kicker" brace....and as I am the only one allowed to put up the bracing...and test it (biggest guy on the job) I do feel comfortable with it...been doing it for so long I guess its old hat...plus, I only allow myself and one other to work on the planks...its not a place for anyone that gets "butt pucker" from a 8'double sided step ladder...
I've used pumps on a few other jobs I've sub'd on and really like the convenience of them...maybe I'll be good enough this year for Santa to bring me 3 or 4 of them....but I doubt it...
"knowledge without experience is just information." Mark Twain
Charlie-
Where are you at? I acquired a couple sets of used pumps. They need oil and cleaning, but otherwise in pretty good shape. I'm personally thinking about getting a few sections of pipe scaffold.

Oh yeah, prestained too.
I'm not supplying, but last time I bought these unstained, they were around $90.00 a box.
I don't think you can beat shingles for siding, unless your one of those guys that likes cement!
EricI Love A Hand That Meets My Own,

Wow, that's cool.
What are the panels made up of as well as the box??
EricI Love A Hand That Meets My Own,
With A Hold That Causes Some Sensation.
[email protected]
The cabinet is red oak and the door panels are 12" x 12" pieces of oak parquet flooring that I laminated onto some 1/4" oak ply. The crown molding under the top is stock material that I cut down. The molding around the base is home made.
The piece is intended to closely match a 30 yr old china hutch the customer owns and I think I managed to nail it pretty well. Here are pics of the hutch and the newly stained piece. I had planned to spray the first coat of finish today, but it's raining and I really don't want to spray in the shop. - lol
That looks nice Dave!
I'd say that it qualifies well for creative secondary uses for parquet flooring!!
EricI Love A Hand That Meets My Own,
With A Hold That Causes Some Sensation.
[email protected]
Yeah, I thought it was pretty cool myself. - lol
When the customer said that they wanted to 'match' the old china hutch, I told them that the parquet look may be hard to do (well, not so hard as expensive - lol). I was amazed when I found the prefinished 12" parquet squares at Home Depot. They're 5/16" thick and I laminated them to 1/4" oak ply then rabbetted the edges to fit in the door rails & stiles.
The next trick was to come up with a stain that matched the parquet AND worked with the china hutch. After some experimenting, I found that a 1:1 mix of Minwax "English Chestnut" and "Golden Oak" nailed it.
The weather cleared today and I was able to spray the first coat of poly. When it's done, I'll get some more pics - including some closeups of the doors.

That would be IMERC, who landed in Texline for a spell, before heading back to the mountains of CO. In my youth, I worked in a number of Panhandle locations, Texline being one.
Drink on for me next time you go to the Dixie Chicken.
Was there Friday night, and have been warned to be ready for the out-of-towners coming in to get their "fix," this Friday night.
So, it's a virtual guarantee. What may be trickier is getting a good Chicken Oil Company burger between now and then (it being about that time again).
Oh, and they wrote up the Thicket in the Dallas Sunday paper--so dozens of folk with more money than sense had now "heard" all about it. Be prepared for some "foriegn" license plates being lost and looking for a sign that says "big thicket." What is the device that is attaching your harness tag line to the main line? Looks something like a Jumar (sp?) ascender from rock climbing. Yours appears to slide (maybe) up and down the main line for quick length adjustment -- what is it and where do you get them?
Thanks - Jim

We are using two different ones..both are quick to ascend, but one style opens likea book to clamp the rope, the other is a thru feed..it is a pain.We just started with these, and it is not my personal rig. I am contemplating a whole new set up..because tha actuall harness just about castrates me even with no tension on it..( I am kinda tall and thin).I do like the clamp on type carabiner or what ever it is, over the other BIG time, and I just brought home one of the other harnesses that is like what DAle was wearing, buckles for under the seat, instead of the locked squares..Basically, let me get back to you..my homework is not done yet, nor is my terminology...I'd much prefer a better set up, I am just using what is provided for me, thankfully.I'll let ya know what I can find out..but size matters.

Sphere, Thanks for the reply - let me know what you find out. I get tired of retying rock climbing knots and have a tendency to sometimes let the main line get too long.
