Skim-coating with joint compound covers texture, renews old drywall and plaster, and leaves smooth surfaces ready to paint.

I got an early start today cuz the Boston Marathon shuts down half the main routes in my area. Got onsite where I'm building some double decker porches by 7. Set all the stringers. Set 14 railing posts. Installed risers and treads. Went down and built all the railings while ye ole' helper installed 'em. Finished the day by pre-cutting all the parts for the sister to this porch that's going up next door. Home by 5:45 with my first sunburn of the season. A week ago today I was working in a 40 degree cold rain....today it hit 86....gotta love New England. A very good day all in all. Listened to the Sox hand the Yankees the third azz whoopin' this week.

little trim work, little bullsh!t, turned in a house bid, walked on water for a bit...
off to get a haircut.
Tore out the rest of the tile from Hell, figured out how to level out an uneven floor, visited my old buddies at FHB, ran to the lumberyard to pick up underlayment, Vycor, flashing and 50 ft. of clear red cedar claps. Then I went and looked at a small trim job that might grow into a screened porch. When I got home, there was a call from an architect about building his house. A good Monday.

Started a new job today, quit working for a remodeler and went to work in one of the finest custom cabinet shops in Austin TX, the quaility of work is much more demanding, the customers are much more demanding, the guy that I work for is much more demanding, and I took a $2.50 per hour pay cut to boot. I could not be happier.
This was a fine day!
Drinks are on me, try to get something in a generic beer if you dont mind.

Passed 3 ground iron inspections today. The wind was never under 40mph all day so I got my teeth polished at no charge.
Went home for lunch & unloaded 50 shares of TBI for double what I paid for it,so let me take care of the tab!
Trim trim trim. Got going on window and door casings. In short order discovered that cabinets are showing early and marble guys are starting at the end of this week. Hmm. Underlayment showed up at noon. Dropped what I was doing and started getting ply down. Sweat a lot. Cussed the framers a lot (how hard is it really to make a room even sort of square . . . grrrrrr)

What I did today.....
I went to my favorite doctor's office.
He gets to pay me for services rendered.
Then to the accountant's office.
I overpaid my state unemployment tax. I get it back.
Signed up for my continuing education courses.
I get to part with some of the money I got from the doctor.
Went to my bank.
Cashed the check from WorkShopJon for the granite. Thanks Jon.
Picked some more grapefruit. Yum.
Sandblasted today , one snowplow 6salt spreaders a dumptruck box and frame and a small crawler chassis.
Then dug out a beaver dam so the creek can do its job.
mowed grass ,checked on the sweet corn ......it's just starting to break through . I think I'll plant more tomarrow if it isn't raining.
What a weird week. First sunburn of the year on Monday and yesterday it was back in the forties and raining. By 10am yesterday I had a 103* fever. Went home, and got in the shower and just stood.....after about 1/2hr it kinda felt like the chill may have left my bones. Slept the rest of the day.
Woke up this morning with big plans.....no good. Still got the fever (about 101* today) and don't feel like doing nothin! Looks nice out, but I just don't have it in me today.
Bummer.

Rebirth of an old thread topic.
I found my excavator at breakfast and asked if he could deliuver four holes today or tomarrow.
I cut ion and set two roof jacks with pipe for the plumber.
Half my crew showed up - bad cold viruses going around - and I got tyhem started on a siding section
I made up a steel jack section to support an old timber in the masonry mass for the fireplace/chimney expert.
I moved a stack of luber so the excavator would be able to deliver those holes, and did the batterboards and layout.
made a couple phone calls and went to lunch so I would be there when the holes came
found the excavator at lunch in an unhappy mood becasue he tore the sidewall out of an inside dually getty the machine out of where it was. Sharp rock. Asked if I could help but he had his helper on the way with the spare.
By 1:30 we were grading and placing the holes. I went in for a bit to interpret drawings for the electrician, and look over everybodies shoulders briefly.
moved the trash trailer out of the way. The last two holes won't get placed until tomrrow because of the late start. As long as he's there, he can dig the line in from well to foundation for the plumber.
we've got monday out of the way!

Excellence is its own reward!
Stopped by the plumbers shop on the way to the job. He'll have someone out in a bit to remove the sink, dw,plumbing, and rough in for the new kitchen. Good, I can concentrate on something else till he gets that outta the way.
Stopped at the donut shop to get some for the cab delivery guy, and the plumber that'll show up mid morning.
Cabs arrive, stocked the kitchen with the heavy ones, stocked the attached garage with the rest. Delivery guy was nice enough to help, tho curbside is what they wish. Tip him and offer donuts.
Tear out the closet in the kitchen, built like they wanted it to stay. Find a drain from the upstairs laundry a bit too low and far out to soffit in. They ran the washer box to a 3" drain, must be unvented. Plumber will be here shortly, he'll figure a way to uncobble this mess and move it up and back.
Ate the plumbers donuts for lunch. I'm sure he'll make it, but might as well forget the call and tear out the sink, dw and get the rest of the cabs out.
Plumbers boss shows up, apologizes for the delay, we walk through the full kitchen rough needed, and plan the removal of all the 30 y.o. copper that's been developing pin hole leaks. I get lucky, he calls Bob, good plumber that's used to remodel work. Treats the customers home well.
Bob shows up, cuts (good/straight) the drywall needed to replumb, figures how to move the big drain line, and we find a covered outlet box that's been hot for 30 years, uncapped. Good, gives us a counter outlet w/o going to the panel.
Homeowner comes home. Nice widow, has her work cut out for her cleaning out the closet and laundry for work tomorrow. Made a visqueen wall for tomorrow using the Third Hands. Easy.
Good day, hope tomorrow is better............at least shorter.

Quittin' Time
Went to a quick walkthrough for a customer at 9 AM. Came back and got about five lines of a proposal put together, and at 10:15 my fire department pager went off. About 40 of us converged on an attic fire and got it out before it came through the roof or walls. Spent an hour firefighting and about five more cleaning up and packing gear and getting our engines back in service. I am so completely exhausted now that I think tomorrow will be marginal.
Put down seven, forty foot 16 inch auger cast piling, only 318 more to go, and read the newspaper.

Went to my boys soccer game, after the game saw the coach on the other team complaining like he always does got tired of it..asked him if he brought a towel....he told me F.U. I told him bite me I walked away while he called me a "POS American "
BTW he is one of the millions of Illeagals that are coming here, and I walked away because i have about 8 karate students that i teach on that soccer team and I didnt want them to see their instructor throw some guy around like a bar towel so drove home and started working on the shed.....typical Saturday for me.....

Ron,
You are a better man than I. Probably saved yourself bail money to! DanT
Ya know after I walked back over to him saw some of his buds holding him. I was calm and in control, I could see that my calmnest shocked him. I think He knew he was going to be in trouble.
I guess when your all pissed and ready to fight and the guy your pissed at ,walks up to you clam looks you in the eye then just turns around and calmly walks away....sends a very good message... like maybe I dont want to fool with him....anyway got the fundation done on the shed and BBQ'd some dogs showed a couple of my students who are friend of my boys some old videos of me fighting had a nice afternnon....
Darkworksite4:

I think you sent the wrong message to your students. Calmness, self disipline...all very excellent traits, we should all be better people if we had these...Some foreigner calls me a POS American on my soil, I turn him into a puddle of human meat goo where he stands, then turn to the students and explain what it is to be an American, and how we should take none of this IN OUR HOUSE!
Believe me Keith it was hard. But ya know I think I had to show the kids that I practice what I teach. Self defense is exactly that. If I were to mop the floor with julio (thats what we call them are here) then if they got in trouble at school for fighting cuz someone called them a name. When I lectured them about it they would be able to say 'Well Sensei thats what you did"
Instead I talked to them as individuals and explained to them that even though He called me a name (they were the ones that told me as I was walking away from the situation). I also used it as a teaching point on character, That if someone says something to you while your walking away from them dont worry cuz if they had any cajones they would of said it their face. so all in all even though Julio said what he did I used it as a teaching tool to better the kids. BTW even the parents who heard it said Well what is he doing here.

Ron,
Let me say that I believe with all my heart you did the right thing. And I am sure the example you set will be of lasting value to those kids. But I would have handled it in a similar manner to Keith. I am not a goo fan, I like agonizing pain sounds like after a shot to the balls for a begining and then...............well, you get the idea. DanT
Believe me Dan under different circumstances Julio would of gotten his butt kicked, arrested for assault and done some Jail time then back to mexico.....

Back in my younger years, we'd go out with Sensei every so often. Being from a small town, everyone knew us -- we'd give demonstrations at the local malls and at area schools.
It never failed, we'd go out to a bar and somebody would just have to start messing with Sensei. Now, at the time, there were 3 or 4 of us who were competing in amateur kickboxing. We were training every day and, as you can probably relate to, the testosterone was pretty high. At any rate, it seemed we were fighting on a nightly basis, for any reason, at the drop of a hat.
Which is why it amazed us that Sensei could remain so calm in the face aggression. I firmly believe that mastering the arts calls for so much more than mastering techniques. It was that calmness that earned our respect. Had he responded to the aggression in the same way that we would have, that would have lowered him to our level, and in some small way, reduced our respect for him.
Discretion is the better part of valor.
Thank you. I train kids that are in a barrio. they have 2-3 families living inna 1-2 bed room apt. Most of the parents dont spend much time them just let them run the streets. I constantly preach to them about karate being for defense only. If I would of taken this guy out then my students would just do what i did. im hoping to be a positive influence on them. i know one of the kids has no dad, has another brother from a different sperm doner. Good kids but no real male influence in his life. i spend alot of time talking to him and on the weekends he comes over and hangs out with my boy.
ya know its funny I started teaching again because my 10 y o boy wanted to learn. I found out later that some bullies on his soccer team were picking on him. Well after about 9 months of training one of the bullies made the mistake of trying to hit Johnny from behind (after trying to trip him and calling him names during practicce) well Johhny hit him with 2 defensive rear kicks and drilled him with 4 good punche with some hip in it and left the kid doubled over and crying. Now no one picks on him. Its funny though the kid that picked on him listens to me intensely when I talk to the team about team work dedication and a winning spirit and what it takes to win...When talked to the to the kids about this inident and told them see words cant hurt you just walk away... he was listening to me. He seems to be everywhere I am at soccer..Im wondering if his home life sucks too. Im seriously considering taking him as a student too. Maybe it will help him.

hey Gunman
I started pondin' em back after the day was over.
BEfore I ponded back some suds I was up on the roof and finished nailin' up the last of nine sq of perfections.......thats one side of the garage/shop addition.
I was boiling up there......the wife said to me it was so beutiful out today at about 80 deg's..I said go up on the roof.
BEtween being right in the sun and the black felt paper I was like a sponge up there....Took one last deep breath and finished the last course at about 6:00 PM from 8 that morning.
Workshopjon and his brother came by here on Monday around 3ish.
HAd to be about 90 on the roof.....I turn around and see this bmw convertable drive up (what a beauty).
I see two guys get out and pull out a cooler......Beer straight from Millwalkie.....along with a cpl of grapefruits from guess where?
We hung out for about an hour.
Showed them around. All that I'm doing here.
Its a year to the month since they were here last.
They got to meet my lovely wife right before they had to leave to pick up WSJ's wife in NYC.......actually I think he stayed in NYC that night,
What nice guys!
Thank god its going to rain today (did I just say that???).
Spose I'll take it a bit easy and just bend some more copper drip edges (boring)and get ready for when the rain stops to roof the other side of the garage.
Be exhausted

a reasonable couple of days
grouted ceramic tile, a little trim
compression test on the old van, nothing on two adjacent cylinders oops!!!
anybody want a chev 350 with brand new tranny? and a blown head gasket? only 400000 km on itcaulking is not a piece of trim
[chuckle] Spent the first 2 hrs window washing. We have Swiss houseguests coming.
Then I was able to sort out the (used) dust collector system delivered last week. Separated the blower from the cyclone and determined I wouldn't reuse the motor. Have yet to separate the motor from the impeller.
About that time a neighbor showed up to take me, with oxy/acetylene, to work on his Cat loader. I still can't believe he's paying my labor rate, but there it was, cash at the end of the day. I know the tractor as I have the same model. He now has functional steering and an almost connected bucket. The torch that wasn't supposed to cut more than 3/4" had no problem with 1 1/2" hardened steel. Surprised me that he managed to get the flywheel brake installed beforehand. Why he won't buy a decent set of wrenches is beyond me. Was greatly relieved when I took his tractor out for a spin and found nothing much wrong.
When he brought me back we made adjustments to his floor pan to make operation easier. He loves my metal cutting bandsaw, immediately noticed the improvement over the last one. Turns out he's bought a welder, but doesn't know what to do with it.
DW showed up with a bottle of Conundrum wine for dinner. For the uninitiated, pity.
PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
Went to the job , got the crew going,-told em I had to much paperwork,- went to the links- If I didn't 3 putt the five times- woulda broken 80.
First day back from a week at the beach for spring break....no foolin' the crew that I was gonna show up for long. Made my appearance, fought a few small fires and bugged out to go shop for a four post car lift for the garage. Keith
Showed up for an exterior lockout to get a CO. Norco doors, I hate 'em. Homeowners didn't want the usual Norco crap for latches, well who'da thunk the upgrade would fit without modification? Well certainly not the door dealer! Hey, I got 3 swingers done and two sliders, and the the sliders won't lock,LOL. Only 6 more to go.
Oh yeah, "a while you're already here", how about adjusting 8 outlets in an island over a granite granite counter top so they're all the same height...it'd make it so much easier on the granite guys to cut the backsplash...?
On the bright side, a door that has been delivered twice and all scratched up, has arrived again after 10 weeks. It's all scratched up too, but 3rd time's the charm...jeeze I need one of Gunners shaking the head smileys<G>
So okay, I got nothing done today... Don't worry, we can fix that later!
Took the day to run errands for and cook and serve a Birthday dinner to one of the hardest working moms (that worked her job today ) around. A very satisfying and very well spent day if I don't say so myself.
Demonstrated on laptop through the use of posts here why/how homeowner's driveway needed repair. It saved me, I'd guess, about 45 minutes of trying to make a point at today's habitat crew leader meeting. "Here, I've gathered some information from Fine Homebuilding's Breaktime board that might help us come to a decision." I took another bite of pizza as they gazed at the 30-plus suggestions re concrete fix.
It was a good meeting!
stopped in saw a buddy at a high end pump shop. If it can be pumped or vac'd he has it
300PSI @ 100CFM the size of small wheel barrow. 50CFM @ 32" of vac the size of a bread box. Then there was the one that was.... Oh boy.
Found the replacement for that stolen Rol-air. 175PSI max, 11CFM/100PSI w/ 7-1/2 gallon tank, 2.5HP.... 30LBs... Dual voltage.... VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY quiet..... 100 bucks....Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming.... aren't all days the same???
Tore the floor, railing and skirting off an old house porch. Repaired the framing and started the new flooring.
Went to the electric supply house and picked up 200' 10-3 SO cable for a buddy, met him and dropped it off.
Came home and got cleaned up, met with clients on an addition (our first! should be exciting) contract signing.
Came home in time to watch people fall off a cable into the water on Fear Factor.
Watched the Swan turn ugly people into ok looking fake people. Seems like the future. DanT
I walked back in from vacation to see what had happened. There sitting on my desk was a print that they wanted done right away.
It has 15 different hip ridge lines, 9 valley lines, 2 different wall heights, 2 trayed ceilings, piggyback trusses, and a couple of other odd details.
Spent all day laying out trusses and designing them. Still finishing it up this morning.
View ImageA witty saying proves nothing, but saying something pointless gets people's attention.
Delivered and assembled a new table in a customer's home. Stopped by some old customer's houses for some PR. Returned to shop to complete repair and refinishing project of antique ash table.
Well, you know, the usual. Had a 2x10 ceiling joist skip off the plate with toe nail still sticking out the board.
Found out that an 18 foot 2x10 cannot be stopped by trying to imbed the protruding toenail into one's hand.
Just doesn't pay to work in the rain.
