What finish to use on exterior Doug fir
Our pergola has just been completed out of Douglas fir(see photo gallery thread) and some folks have asked what finish I was using.
I thought I’d let it weather naturally, but some on that thread have got me wondering what is best-natural or finish of some kind.
Please give me what you think is the best method for the best longevity.
Thanks in advance. Walter

I don't have a good answer, but this will push your question up a bit where more people can see it. I recently used Cabot water-based finish and liked it a lot, but don't know how it will last in the long term. Some people here seem to like Silkins (I think that's how it's spelled). A clear stain or water repellent may give you some protection without changing the look too much.
Boiled linseed oil..as often as you remember. Just like a shovel handle or a wheel barrow.

BLO would be my choice. It will soak in, and never peel, so the only maintanence should be putting more on once or twice a year.
