   I don't have a good answer, but this will push your question up a bit where more people can see it. I recently used Cabot water-based finish and liked it a lot, but don't know how it will last in the long term. Some people here seem to like Silkins (I think that's how it's spelled). A clear stain or water repellent may give you some protection without changing the look too much.

   There is a product call Hellman`s and it protect the door from the cold and heat, water. I have use it on doors and drawer front and finish panels in the bathrooms. because of the shower. It is a lacquer and it work very well. cooman

   Boiled linseed oil..as often as you remember. Just like a shovel handle or a wheel barrow.

   BLO would be my choice.  It will soak in, and never peel, so the only maintanence should be putting more on once or twice a year.
