Do a Google on Hat or RC Channel. Should get more info that you would ever want!
You might be referring to resilient channel, a rollformed light-gage galvanized steel section, about 5/8" high by 1-1/4" wide in x-section, typically sold in 10 or 12 foot lengths.
Go to the Dietrich Industries website, check out their drywall specialties catalog, and you will see the various choices.
