The drive band of my spinning wheel is a “poly cord” band. It is approximately 3 mm thick, clear and slightly stretchy. You use a match to soften the cut ends, then push them together to fuse and form a continuous circle.
The cord is handy for other applications, but the spinning wheel store sells only short lengths for a lot of money, and there’s shipping on top of that.
Do you have any idea what this stuff is really called (it is not Polycord) and what sort of store sells it?

It's urrethane round belting. I would order it from McMaster Carr. http://www.mcmaster.com/#round-belts/=bgixu0
Do you know any retail chains that carry it? I know for sure that it isn't in my local hardware store.

I don't know of any. But you may be able to get it special ordered at a hardware store, and pick it up there. I really would just buy it from McMaster Carr. Also the color means something, so I would stick to the clear tubing. I order from McMaster Carr every few days, and the orders arrive the next morning even with ground shipping.
Or...
Amazon, 1/8 or 3/16 diameter. 50' for about $30.00.

Just in fun, but I thought a spinning wheel belt needed to be hand woven from distaff spun flax to be a REAL spinning wheel, otherwise just buy a ball of yarn??
One of my retirement projects .... see if I can actually make a shirt 'from scratch' grow some flax or raise some sheep, smelt some iron for an ax forged with rocks, make the wheel from copped and split logs, then go to the shirt part....... before I give up or get bored with the effort. Or keep the day job and buy a $23,000 shirt with the same amount of time??
I have seen one video of a Japanese group that made a Katana from scratch, down to firing seashells for the mortar to make the furnace to smelt the ore .....etc... About the same effort as some of us now spend just to refine the guidance system for weapon system.... hmmm, I wonder if they used matches to start the fires though?
BTW - I bought new poly bands for my bandsaw off ebay already sized and assembled for less than the material would have cost at the best source I'd found, you might do an internet search for a blet fabricated to size, those folks must buy the cord or belt in mile long quantities....
