I own a 1905 house that has teracotta cornices that are at every corner on the house. I am painting the house, and would like to know what kind of paint you would use on teracotta. They have been painted before and need some clean up. The paint that is on there is an old oil base that has for the most part held up for about 80 years. And some parts that need to be repaired, What sort of filler would be good for the teracotta? I’ve had great luck, using auto bondo on wood, would that work? Or should I use something softer.

Is the terra cotta glazed? In any case, a good primer should help. I would guess (and I stress that it's only a guess) that Bondo or similar would work for patching. Or possibly mortar--since terra cotta is sort of like brick? Mortar would be on the soft side and would not perhaps damage it like cement might. Alkyd paint would probably work--something that works on brick.
