ok, let me rephrase that post about ARE…
i need a cap for my 04 tundra. i would like to build a 2/3 deep shelf or drawers below the bed so i can put materials on top & would also like to have side access…
i looked at a gemtop (looked good) but was big bucks. i do not want a flimsy piece of junk and will shell out for good quality. any others i should look at?
thanks.

I have a Leer on my '97 F150. It is the fiberglass model and as you are aware in 97 it cost $1200. It looks great and matches the truck perfectly. It has some crazing at the back top corners, worth the money? In general yes but the aluminum framed on my previous f150 was only $700 and worked just as well, but not as good looking. The weakest thing is the locks on the doors and need upgrading (they all seem to have the same key too!!).
Got a leer on my 93 ford and its held up better than the truck. Got an 02 a.r.e. on my other truck and its leaked since day one. They tried to fix it twice but i just gave up and put silicone on it every now and then.
do you have a glass or metal cap by lear? i was told that the lear is aluminum and will look like a golf ball in 6 months... the one feature i know i want is side doors so i can get at stuff. i just need to decide what brand and what material.
thanks

Fiberglass. It still shines like new and has no cracks even after being on a 4x4 with pretty heavy off road use. Its the high top model so the side windows only go down 2/3 of the side. If i had to buy another id get the lower profile with the full side windows for better acess to the bed. The a.r.e. on my new truck is a nice looking cap and real accessable for my tools it just leaks bad around the back window and no one has been able to fix it yet. Its fiberglass too.
I just got a Swiss commercial top for my 97 Ram. I would NOT recommend them! It was resonably priced for a color matched aluminum top with lift gate in the back and full length side doors. I also got the optional over the cab rack which has been a big problem.
They didn't install the rack correctly so over the cab it sits 1" higher on one side. The side that is higher catches the wind coming off the windsheild and the other side doesn't so it vibrates really bad and makes so much noise I can't hear on the phone over about 65. The aren't really willing to do much to correct the problem other than send it back to the factory for 3 weeks.
The weatherstripping started coming off the day after I got it and the keys are getting harder and harder to operate.
The ARE dealer in town wouldn't get back to me in a timely manner when I had a question for him so I decided to go with the Swiss.
Just my 0.02.
