I looked around quite a bit last year at the various brands. I think any of the major ones are pretty similar if you look at the same "level" of product in each brand. For each brand, the quality seems to vary depending on price. I settled on Certainteed - their high end beaded 6.5" looks really nice installed, seems pretty crack resistant in the cold, but doesn't handle like a wet noodle. They also have a 2.5 inch casing for windows which looks good instead of J-channel. Heartland has a brickmold profile J/casing for windows which I have looked at; but the accompanying siding did not look so hot.
