I am just starting a handyman business and what is a fair rate to charge for painting three bedrooms and 2 small baths. Do I charge by the sq. ft. or by the day. Any help would be helpful, thanks.

The simple answer is all that they are willing to pay, but that is not much help is it? The way that I do it, which pobably is not the best, but ok for me, is figure about how many days, then multiply times daily wage I will consider worthy, and presto you have the labor amount. Many questions before any good answer is available. How big are the rooms, same color?, trim and doors, cleaning first?, ceiling too or just walls. I can charge 950 for three same color small bedrooms and baths without ceilings and do it in three days of rolling pretty easy. Some are better than others but so far it works for me. Good luck and keep at it. Eventually it will get easier.

I don't pay painters by the bid. I simply pay them by the hour. Lead gets $25, his helper gets $17. I provide the paint, they provide everything else. In CT.
They're not motiviated to slop it on and move on to beat the estimate, and if they do run into problems/delays, they're not worried about their profit margin shriveling away to nothing.
It all works out in the end. If it's an easy job, he normally knocks a few hundred off the end price. If it was a particularly unruly job, I usually tack an extra few onto his final invoice.
We're both happy, and we're both making money.
