my siding in particular. my house is in Ct if that makes a difference
I’m in the process of staining and painting. on one of the gable ends something has been having its way with my siding. only on the west side of the house and only at the upper reaches under the gable overhang
the siding is 12 yo cedar 1×6 t&g. I last stained it about 4 years ago, maybe 5.
it looks like where the siding has been burrowed through there are scratch marks around the wound, like its feet have been banging while its been at work.
I get a lot of burrowing bee’s in my neck of the woods but It does’nt look like the usual holes they make, or could it be?
hummingbird?
woodpecker?
Bat?
sorry for the file sizes, I thought the higher resolution would show better

What type of file format is that, I could not open any of the files. Also, if you can, you can crop the pictures so just the area you want people to comment on is seen, that should reduce the size. You can also post some compressed pictures with out the detail too, just so the dial ups can get a peek.
format was Dell image expert, but try these
Those work. I agree with the others, it looks like woodpeckers. We had one do the same thing a few years ago before we replaced the siding. The siding was old compressed cardboard type crap. The surface was fairly smooth, more so than yours, and they had no problem holding on. From inside, that little thing made a lot of noise pecking at the siding, caught him doing it a few times.Your want to fix the holes, but first get rid of what ever they are feeding on.
I'm just a little surprised I never heard anything. the area is not far from my bedroom

Clearly... more than one happy wood pecker at your house.

Woodpeckers
I'm thinking a woodpecker need to hold on to something...?
Looks like the woodpeckers are going after the bee larva. Pic 208 clearly shown the little pecker tracks.
It's dem doity boids.
Pecker holes like that in my local generally indicate Downy/Hairy or Ladderback woodpeckers which are small 4" or so insect eaters. Previous poster has it right...they hear the insect larvae burrowing in the wood and excavate for their food.
The cute little birds are quite proficient at it!
The woodpecker is your secondary problem, the primary one is the insects that are burrowing in your siding. The first line of defense would be a water based insecticide, followed by time to allow for drying and then a good exterior wood sealant/clear finish.
Also consider the possibility that the insects have invaded you attic space and laying eggs in the wood from the back side. Checks out you attic space.
If things are really bad...hire a reputable exterminator.
