What’s the Difference?

| Posted in General Discussion on October 7, 2000 02:13am

*
So if an editor at FHB were to be working after hours listing topics for future “What’s the Difference?” columns, what would you hope would occur to him?

Sometimes it is difficult to judge how useful our readers would really find certain topics. Have you found yourself at the hardware store recently, scratching your head over a choice when, if you knew the difference between different items, you could be out the door and back at work?

    I was going to ask...

"What's the difference between JLC and FHB?"

...but since you're looking for serious input, I won't.

*Between a building inspector and a washed up , no talent, bankrupt contractor that could'nt make it?

*Keith, In your particular case, a big red tag.

*I have wanted to know the differences (other than price)in the choices of telephone wires to use in rough-in wiring my houses. There are a number of different grades available - which one for which use?

          1. jim_"crazy_legs"_blodg | Sep 21, 2000 04:11am | #5

*and the fact that the building inspector makes a decent living, has benefits, job security, and gets weekends off.

          2. jim_"crazy_legs"_blodg | Sep 21, 2000 04:18am | #6

*How about common building materials like windows - vinal vrs wood (besides looks)?...or siding - vinal, wood, fiber cement?...or finger jointed studs vrs dimensional lumber?...or OSB vrs CDX?just basics like what comes up here at Breaktime would be good, I'd think.

          3. Keith_C | Sep 21, 2000 01:07pm | #7

*Crazy...what was I thinking? Weekends off, paid holidays and benefits! Ride around all day and look at construction projects.I may have to rethink this. I could get about 10 houses going at once, get them all to the framing draw at once, get the draws, stiff the framers and suppliers, hide the money and go belly up. Get the inspector gig, and play God.Who cares if they only make $8.00/hr (around here, they do)I could live off the interest of my other investment program. Keith C.

          4. jim_"crazy_legs"_blodg | Sep 21, 2000 03:41pm | #8

            *...they make about 40k/year here.

          6. David_Ericson | Sep 25, 2000 08:14pm | #10

*Thanks, TLE. I don't know about the phone wires and will look into it.

          7. David_Ericson | Sep 25, 2000 08:20pm | #11

*Thanks, Crazy Legs. Some of those are in fact already on the list. Sometimes it isn't clear what's useful, what obvious, etc. By the way I hear that I missed meeting you on a trip you took through Newtown. I think you were escorting an illegal alien to the border.

*In addition to telephone wires hozsabout coax cables for cable tv. Thinly woven sheild vs. tighly woven sheild vs. foil sheild ? What's the difference ?"Silver" connectors or "gold" connectors ? Splitters ?Floor patching and leveling mixesFlooring adhesives

          9. Phill_Giles | Sep 26, 2000 04:20am | #13

*Might as well add CAT 5 and fibre optics to your cable list; if you aren't installing them in new home construction now, you soon will be.

          10. jim_"crazy_legs"_blodg | Sep 26, 2000 06:28am | #14

*Well, I was mostly embarrassed to be there. Hopefully we'll meet next time.
