What’s with 2×10 x24′ + being fingerjoin
Bought a 2×10 26′ long today for an arbor I am refurbishing and it was finger jointed.Called several other yards and they were fj too.
Found a 32’er fir without but it cost 58$ so still looking but I gotta buy something tomorrow.

Oh Oh.....I never saw that before.

I bought some DF #2 2x6-24' solid not FJ and they were $25 each.
Ya, but you're in fir country. Not exactly cheap these days to drag a load of fir to Tennessee...
I'm just sayin... you can s/o long sticks and they cost accordingly. Apparently some yards even stock them, although not here.
I found a yard that had a 2x10 x28' for 33$ in fir.
I just was suprised to see the industry as a whole going to fingerjointed "in pine at least" as a viable replacement for joists and rafters.

I have serious questions about fingerjointed stock like that used other than vertically. There are FJ studs available, and they are often as lousy as the solid ones, but at least in that application you are not loading the joints sideways.
FJ story: the first time I bought FJ trim I loaded it on my rack as usual. It was all 16' long and at the time I had a Toyota with a 6' bed, so the easiest places to tie were at the rear and then 6' from the rear. With the material sticking 2 feet off the rear, it was sticking 8 feet in front of the front tie-down. Still with me? So, I'm driving down the 580 freeway in Oakland and as I passed Grand Avenue I hear this huge snapping noise. I look in my rearview mirror in time to see all of these chunks of white FJ base hitting the windshield of a BMW behind me. I stopped and he stopped... no damage so he left... and then I picked up the pieces. All of the breaks were at the joints. It was from the wind bending the stuff up and back on my rack.

Glad I am not the only one who has done that. Luckily no BMW behind me.

Fj joists give me the willies too, but there was a thread on them here about a year ago, and as I remember they are commonly used in some areas.
Are there grade stamps on that finger jointed stock? If so, what are they?

I took it back.
