I try to get on here almost every nite,to check in on the ongoing threads and new topics of interest.I notice the times of your posts, and just sitting here wondering~~~~~~~These guys seem like they know what they’re talking about(sometimes),but when in the H*** do they actually get out there and work.Seems like some of you are on break(time) all day and all nite.I don’t seem to have enough time(even though it’s slow here in the midwest right now)to look at all the stuff being written here.I also have 3 little ones I need to spend time with, but jee-wiz,this stuff is addicting.BTW,I just tucked them all in bed, should be sleeping pretty soon, but then I gotta spend a little time with mama too(or is it(to)). Well, anyway,I’m just curious, are you guys not working much right now or do you have crews out in the field doing what you talk about doing on here!!

MAJ, sleep deprived. Factor in time zones, snow, a hot dry season in Australia, not to mention the Canadians... well you've got the picture.
*Maj, I don't have cable, the dog doesn't want to hunt, the neighbors don't like it when I shoot out the window, I'm designing myself a new house that I can't build because I can't afford myself and now you want to know why I spend time talking to you guys.Damn it I need a life, I'm depressed now, Thanks for nothing Maj, I'm going to bed.Nite all.
*GabeIt's early yet, Mike Mahan, and the other Californians haven't got up from the dinner table yet. The Sens are winning for goodness sakes!!!MajWhere there's a will there's a way. . . sleep deprivation, and goofing off (think I'll go home and check the email that I'm not expecting, oh, while I'm here lets check Breaktime)) are lifestyle choices. It will all end shortly, I suspect, for most of us. Spring looms. . . well, maybe
*Gosh darn, Patrick. You read my thoughts exactly.I don't know why it took so long for this question to be posted. It's not like it is a new phenomenon.
*Maj,It is "too", and the constant flow is the benefit of the internet (as Patrick M. pointed out) that we can all converse without talking at the same time. Personally, I check in a couple of times a day from my "real" job, and it only takes a few minutes. Ain't life grand! My 3 are asleep (#4 not quite here yet), so I'm enjoying the P&Q.
*yep, we've all got the same number of hours in the day, it's just how you use them. No more " Judge Judy", though I'm not ready to give up " Home Improvements " yet. Most of mine are too big to get tucked in now, though our only daughter still insists on it and we have to arrange the teddy bears in their pecking order. At least the boys are old enough to send out for beer ( they pay of course ) now, ( medicinal purposes only), ........oh...oh... I feel faint.....
*My daughter asked the same thing! I just happen to be, between jobs, and the boys were finishing the last house. If I was there, I'd work them out of work, just that much sooner. Then the next house that was supposed to be ready got goofed up (whats a little 4' error among friends?! The last time I rode through the sub, the poured walls were stacked up in an ugly pile waiting to be hauled away! OUch! My leave is extended.I'm starting a new house FRi.Blue<
*Part of this business is when the good jobs come along... You work your keester off. I've discovered that if you just skip the risky and low paying jobs you tend to increase profit and decrease losses, not to mention having more time to do the things you enjoy. I'm glued to the computer right now putting the finishing touches on a project (Speculative Computer Design), and next week I get to try my hand at flogging it to the masses. We work in Rosedale, Lawrence Park, Etobicoke and Forest Hill, (in Toronto, Ontario), most of the time on high end trim and that wacky stuff that landscape architects and garden designers dream up. They give me a concept and I put the details to it, and give budgetary expectations. This lands me on the computer @30% of the time. Aside from that we draw up the odd addition. Yet another contractor that needs challenge and variety to keep my interest. This place is addictive and breaks up my day rather nicely.
*MAJ,1. It's not very good roofing weather in my part of the country right now.2. can only read so many books a week. 3.refuse to hook up to cable t.v.(not gonna pay somone else to watch my own t.v.)4.can only spend so much time lifting weights and swimming laps at local natatorium. 5.(and most important) wife and kids at school an there is nobody else at home to play with! Good Luck,Stephen
*Still in the design phase of a kitchen job. My eyes are bloodshot from reworking these !@#$ 3D drawings. Met with client last night, and they seem ready to settle on the first design I came up with a month ago.Steve
*Lawrence, your point about skipping the risky ones is excellent advise indeed! I've found that if I'm busy on a loser, I can't land the winners: I'm too busy!and the ironic thing? The losers drag on for twice the time, thus causing you to lose twice the amount of winners! It's better to suck it up, and wait it out!For instance, when I found out I ws going to have another week off, due to the basment error, I went "basment hunting". I found a sub with several basements poured, and ready to go. The builder shows me a lousy plan, so faded, I had to move it into a different light JUST TO SEE THE FAINT OUTLINE OF SOME LINES! I'm thinking "this cheap bastard won't even give his carpenters a decent set of prints to work with"! No wonder there's basments sitting.Anyways, it's a brick ranch. He wants to know how much. I look it over for 5 seconds, and tell him $5.50 per foot min, depending on features, and jobsite conditions. He says "we only pay 5.00$, take it or leave it".I left it, and on the way home found that my main builder could get one half-assed ready by fri., at the normal 5.75 plus features. I would have had to pass it up, had I got tied up with the other "take it or leave it - I'm too cheap to pay a good contrator", what he wants, guy! I've done two of these in month, with my three guys.Walk, don't run from the losers! Even if you have to take an unscheduled vacation! Except after 25 years in the field, I know that spring vacations are part of my life, they're not unscheduled, or unexpected!Blue<
*Government job.
*Barry wins hands down, we're in the presence of greatness.
*Maj, the simple answer is I don't work.Seriously, I currently have three crews, and spend my days, doing paperwork, returning calls, bids, supervising those clowns, and (ugh) call backs. I am also currently applying for a government job to be Barry's assistant.
*Maj,Why would you bring up one of lifes anoyances that interfere with importnat things like fishing?
*Sounds great...give us all terminals, we all type all day and get paid for it too. Which Govt? I don't have my green card yet. Not too many mail order brides down there.
*I start work five minutes before my wife gets home and stop five minutes after she leaves. My goal is to pare it down to 4 minutes by summer.
*LIKE IT!!!
