I am replacing much of the wire in my house, as it was the old knob and tube. I have limited access in some areas and have used plain Romex making sure it is mechanical connected to the junction boxes. Of course in the walls I am unable to secure it. Is that within the code for remodels?
Also I am installing recessed ceiling lights. It calls for MN-B cable. My electrical code book doesn’t mention this type of wiring. Would it be armored? Do I need armored wiring for these lights?

NM means non-metalic (ie, Romex). The B designation just means it's an "enhanced" (temperature-upgraded) version of plain NM.
Unsecured wire is "generally" OK in retrofit situations so long as the wire is secured as it enters the box and not subject to snagging or similar problems (eg, don't run it unsecured (if at all) in a pocket door pocket).
Of course, remember that one meaning of "generally" is "not particularly".
