I’m building a sun screen on the deck and want to use a better looking joist hanger in attaching it to the house than the ones for frame work that get hidden….you know, like exist for huge glulams inside buildings or at theme parks but need it for an ordinary 2 X 4. Where do you get these? Thanks!!

Design what you want, take the design to a local welding shop, select the material, and have them fabricated. Last one's I did were made of 1/8" plate and are a very nice detail in the ceiling. Well worth the cost.
*I like the sound of those homemade hangers.Joist hangers serve four functions:- lift (bearing) - spread prevention- twist prevention- load transfer (to plate or girder)They are also spec'ed to a coded tolerance and load, so the homemade hangers have to be designed and fabricated with these things in mind.Angle iron, bolted through or lagged can easily handle the bearing weight and load transfer but doesn't prevent spread of joist ends from the plate. You can do some interesting things with plywood and hardwood.
*Archives, archives, archives. The answer is there, with lotsa posts. Check em out.I take Simpson's dip them in muriatic acid and take them to a plating shop for brassing.
*Or just do away with the hangers and build it the way it was done before hangers.
*You can also buy ss hangers ... if you have to ask the price, you can't afford 'em. I vote with Ryan (though I like the ingenious home-rolled solutions!).
*Brian:I have a source for appearance-grade hangers for beams but don't know if they stock for dimensional lumber-will check at office tomorrow and forward phone#-don't think they have a website.
*Mc Feelys stocks stainless hangers.
